I love the Leafs, but agree with BB that Leafs fans are some of the worse. Every top free agent or player on the trade block just has to come to Toronto, and yet it rarely happens and we get pissy and let down. I think a lot of it has to do with the media. I can see why other fans dislike the Leafs fans. We have some strange sense of entitlement even though we haven't won a cup since '67.

 

I see nothing wrong with fans cheering for a top 5 pick if the team doesn't have a shot at the playoffs. I've been guilty of doing this. In the last ten years I don't know how many times the Leafs have been a bottom dwelling team in the standings, then worsen their draft position by winning the majority of their final games after being eliminated. This would be used by management to say "Well the team played great down the stretch, if they play like that next year the playoffs will be easy to make!" which created a vicious cycle.

 

Great management is in place, a great young core is being made in the NHL with one of the youngest and most talented AHL squads. The Leafs are on the rise, so some fans are going to be more unbearable in the future!

I haven't hated the Sens as much since Alfie left. Once Neil leaves I'll be able to tolerate them that much more! As for Laine vs Matthews, every analyst figured that Laine would have a better 1st season in the NHL, but Matthews will be a #1 centre by year's end and you always take a #1 C over a #1W if you don't have either on your roster at that time. Ehlers, Scheifele and Laine are a better line than Hyman, Matthews and Nylander.

I was never a big fan of Stamkos signing in Toronto. They're not ready to commit that kind of dollar and term yet. They're still rebuilding and need complete flexibility. Anyone with any sense of the situation sees that. These fans you speak of are the same ones that are kicking Cecil on the way out, would give Edwin 5/125, and would've signed Bautista for 5/150.

I was moreso going from the perspective of other teams' fans towards Leafs fans, not generalizing Leafs fans myself as every team had "those fans".

I've never been to a game in Ottawa, but that's unfortunate if true.

 

It's the result of those games being an 'event' for Leafs fans. They come in from out of town to see their team because it's easier and cheaper than getting tickets in Toronto, and spend the night in the city. A bunch of young guys on a night away are going to have a lot of drinks, so you have young drunk guys acting like drunken idiots. Most people try to avoid those games because of it. I don't even have kids and if I see 3-5 games a year I prefer that none are Leafs games.

 

Obviously every fanbase has idiots, but the fact that tickets are cheaper in Ottawa than Toronto just creates a perfect storm for the CTC to be overrun with idiots in Leafs jerseys.
