burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Everyone keeps calling him a top-4 D. I have no idea whether that's true, but I tend to believe that Cyborg is right and they're all dumn. Even if he is a top 4D the trade is awful. In baseball terms this would be like making a trade to make a 78 Win team to a 80 Win team while taking up an additional 10% of payroll for 4 additional seasons knowing full well the contract is already a bad one and will be an albatross in 2 years. Only benefit is Elisha Cuthbert living in Ottawa.

Unless I'm mistaken, the following are more or less all true: - One of Ottawa's biggest weakness had been puck possession, especially from their D. - Phaneuf's only real skill is generating offense on the power play. - The last thing Ottawa needs is a skilled D to QB their power play. - Ottawa is in a position where every dollar has to be maximized if they want to be successful. Given all of this, the trade only makes sense if the guys in charge of Ottawa think Dion Phaneuf will drive possession and provide significant value at even strength, even though the numbers are apparently pretty loud in saying that he won't. First of all the Sens FO barely even looks at puck possession or if they do they don't know how to value it. (One of the worst orgs. in sports in terms of anaytics). I will say Phaneuf is an upgrade over Cowen and Boro at even strength and on the powerplay. Funny thing is though is this probably bumps Wiercioch out of the lineup who is likely better than Phaneuf. In terms of $ and timeline it makes no sense. Ottawa is a bad team this year who won't make the playoffs and Phaneuf isn't changing that. Long story short they gave up futures for a player that is going to make them better this year and maybe next year while also decreasing their chances at getting a better draft pick. If they make the playoffs they sure as hell won't get past the first or second round. And finally this trade makes it very difficult for Ottawa to compete in 3 years when most of their roster should be in their prime years. I feel bad for Karlsson whose generational career is being wasted on a crap team.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Ottawa fans on HF are thrilled, even though they've been s***ing on Phaneuf for like 6 years. Holy f*** I hate hockey. That is no place to go if you're looking for intelligent fans.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 This is the worst 9 player trade I've ever seen Is the Jays/Astros 10 player deal the worst 10 player deal ever?
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Is the Jays/Astros 10 player deal the worst 10 player deal ever? Some talent was moved in that deal, notably Happ and Musgrove.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Some talent was moved in that deal, notably Happ and Musgrove. Phaneuf = Happ. Lindberg = Musgrove (probably better than Musgrove) 2nd rounder has value.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 This is the worst 9 player trade I've ever seen lol
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Leafs come away on top, sweet.
Molitor Verified Member Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 I am thrilled by this trade. Get rid of Phaneuf's cap hit over the next 5 years. The garbage we got back all come off the books after next year and I read that Cowen actually has a negative cap hit if he gets bought out. Lindberg or the 2nd rounder could amount to something semi useful. 2017/18 season, here we come! The Nonis/Burke legacy is close to being undone!
Frag Verified Member Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Phaneuf is either a non-asset or a negative value piece, so it makes sense if it's just all garbage. Toronto sneaking an Ottawa 2nd rounder into the trade might be the only value. Leafs will likely buy-out Cowen's contract:
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Lots of cap coming off the books... smell a Stamkos!
Frag Verified Member Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Lindberg's estimated AHL numbers are apparently pretty good, at least according to prospect-stats.com. FWIW, he topped his team (min. 30 GP) in est PrimaryP/60 and EV est GF% Rel. Seems like a decent prospect.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 There's rumours "out there" that Hartley steamed off the ice during practice yesterday in Calgary... ie: hungover players.(after the SB) The consequence is healthy scratches of Gaudreau/Monahan and Bouma, thoughts Cyborg? Does this have traction besides SN media?
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 just happy not to have Phaneuf giving away the puck at the blue line. maybe we wont be giving up 50 shots a game now?

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Yeah, he is a good spect, plus a 2nd is gravy! especially when the 2nd is Ottawa's... could be a high 2nd in 2017
GD Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2016 Author Posted February 10, 2016 As someone who likes the Leafs but finds the current game of hockey boring as hell this is very pleasing
Zaun of the Dead Verified Member Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 possession hockey is here to stay. it might not be exciting offensively, but the stickwork we see these days is crazy
BTS Community Moderator Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 I can't stop reading the HF Sens Phaneuf thread: "We don't need Phaneuf to put up points. I don't care about that, at all. We need a solid vet to mentor Ceci. If we can have him just stick to being a defensive defenseman and being solid in our own end....I'll be relatively satisfied. Not happy....but satisfied." That's like saying "we don't need Ryan Goins to play good D, but if he can hit 30 bombs and provide depth behind the top-5, I'll be relatively satisfied. Not happy....but satisfied."

Just a heads up- Jared Cowen will now be playing defence. Might have the worst instincts I've ever seen in a hockey player. Good news is he likely is only there for another couple months.

Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 Anytime look at the Leafs lineup for tonight? No Kadri No Bozak No JVR This could be the worst Leafs lineup in their hundred year history.
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 Chicago gets the nhl draft. so much for the leafs hosting all the big events for their 100th, lol!
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 Only fitting that mcjesus gets 5 points against the leafs

Trouba95 Old-Timey Member Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 Laff fans wishing McDavid was theirs. Hahahahahha
