BTS Community Moderator Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 There was no way leafs were getting a big return given the circumstances. If leafs can flip spaling I don't mind this trade. They could have just kept Kessel.
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 They could have just kept Kessel. were rebuilding, and he clearly didn't want to be here. He had to go
Swervin81 Verified Member Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 Kessel had to go, absolutely. I don't like the deal much from a value standpoint (matter of fact, the Pens bent us in this regard), but not only do I like Kapanen, but I also like the fact that the rebuild is officially on. The culture change will indeed happen. Expecting Phaneuf now to return a cap dump, a mid round pick, and a hot dog, but oh well. Nonis was an idiot for handing out those absurd contracts in the first place.
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 If we can flip Spaling then the overall trade is fine. Now trade lupul, bozak for anything you can get lol
havok24 Old-Timey Member Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 The Leafs are sending back a 2nd to Pittsburgh on top of retaining 1.25M on the cap for the next 7 years? Okay.
BTS Community Moderator Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 were rebuilding, and he clearly didn't want to be here. He had to go It could take a decade or more to find a player as good as Kessel. In a year or two when the Leafs are trying to convince people that they're ready for a playoff push they'll be missing that 40-goal talent.
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 The Leafs are sending back a 2nd to Pittsburgh on top of retaining 1.25M on the cap for the next 7 years? Okay. Retaining cap was a must if we were going to trade him. Trading the 2nd sucks but I'd trade the late 2nd for two 3rd (assuming we can trade spaling)

He didn't care being here.
canadiansportsjunkie Verified Member Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 They are sending Pittsburgh 2nd not ours... I would like to see the breakdown of the retaining salary
BTS Community Moderator Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 I agree, but Kessel was not the guy. He didn't care being here. Seems like a baseless narrative to me.

Frag Verified Member Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 Kassian to Montreal in exchange for Brandon Prust and a 5th round pick.
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 Is there at least franchise players in next year's draft to justify tanking hard
King Old-Timey Member Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 Is there at least franchise players in next year's draft to justify tanking hard Matthews
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 Matthews Only name I've been hearing, how does the top 5 look next year? Don't compare to this year's draft class lol
havok24 Old-Timey Member Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 Yes Auston Matthews is the next big thing. Best American prospect ever. Better than Eichel?
GD Old-Timey Member Posted July 1, 2015 Author Posted July 1, 2015 Better than Eichel? Probably Chechyrun too or however it's spelled
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 I hope leafs do the same thing this year, sign a few guys and flip them at the TD (give parenteau some minutes and maybe he can get us a 4th)
Swervin81 Verified Member Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 Yes Auston Matthews is the next big thing. Best American prospect ever. Better than Pat Lafontaine and Jack Eichel? Damn. Arizona's gunning hard for him, though. Being a Scottsdale, AZ native doesn't hurt for them too. They get $5M extra floor room by taking on Pronger's contract too to not spend on players.
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 James Mirtle @mirtle The Kessel trade gets worse for the Leafs. The first-round pick is conditional on Penguins making the playoffs. the f***? lol edit. means we would get their 2017 first rounder.

Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 Lets not forget the Leafs basically traded Dougie Hamilton and Tyler Seguin for Kessel. And now this is all they get in return despite being locked up long term and a proven goal scorer. shhhhh lol
Zaun of the Dead Verified Member Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 people actually think the leafs got washed? it's not a great return in terms of bodies but they couldn't have gotten much better. this is a decent trade, I am stoked on the picks and the cap space.
Zaun of the Dead Verified Member Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 wish they could have kept the 2nd rounder though
Slot Machine Verified Member Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 While I do believe that this thread overrates Kessel's trade value, still this return is a little light. Hopefully Kapanen is legit.
canadiansportsjunkie Verified Member Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 The Leafs didn't want to wait and keep Kessel another day longer... If Kessel plays with Crosby he very easily could lead the league in goals. Still waiting for the breakdown on the 15% salary...I'm going to assume it's high in the near years...

What do you mean breakdown? It's a percentage, so 1.275 or whatever per year.
