Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 Bobby Ryan's contract extension with OTT is 7 years with an AAV of $7.25M.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 Bobby Ryan is a pretty good hockey player but you should not build a freaking team around him....
Nox Verified Member Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 Bobby Ryan is a pretty good hockey player but you should not build a freaking team around him.... That contract is absurd.
Nox Verified Member Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 Some of those Bodog player props are insane. Patrick Kane for example: 82.5 points. That's better than a point per game IF (and that's a giant if) we project perfect health for the season. Patrick Kane has not averaged a point per game in his career. Patrick Kane has not averaged a point per game over the past 3 years combined.
Nox Verified Member Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 Yup, these are nuts. They have 12 guys with the line set over 80 points. There were only 5 guys last year to go over 80. Keep in mind, the 5 that went over 80 most likely benefited from above average luck as well. You wouldn't project more than 2 or 3 to go over 80 this year.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 Bobby was 85th in goals created last year... Tied with Mike Cammalleri and Tyler Bozak. Great contract.
BTS Community Moderator Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 Anytime you can move three good young assets for 2 years of a one-dimensional scoring winger who isn't elite, and then lock him up for 8 years at near elite money because the optics of letting him walk would be terrible, you do it. Especially when you won't even make the playoffs in the two years you originally acquired. FML Bobby was 85th in goals created last year... Tied with Mike Cammalleri and Tyler Bozak. Great contract.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 Not sure why you guys are complaining. 7 Million in the NHL in a few years is going to be nothing with the way the cap is going up. I would say he probably could have gotten a lot more in free agency. When the cap goes up to 80 million in a year or 2 his 7.25 will be like 6.25 and the cap will only go keep going up if expansion happens. Also he has a modified NTC so you can still deal him in a few years if you have to go down that road. If you look past a number which may seem a little high right now, this is a pretty good deal for Ottawa when you look at all of the circumstances.
BTS Community Moderator Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 He's just not that good a player.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 He's just not that good a player. He's a great goal scorer as evidenced by his career .138 SH%. He may not do much on the defensive end but I have no problem with this deal. The Cap hit is reasonable and wouldn't stop a team for wanting to trade him in a few years if it doesn't work out for whatever reason. And if you look at it from a non-hockey point of view it was important for the Senators to sign one of their best players longterm after the way Alfie and Spezza just left the org. If they let Ryan walk the Senators would just continue to look like a joke org. that no one wants to play for. As much as you should only look at what the player does on the ice, signing an American star to play in Ottawa looks good from around the league.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 The amount of NTC's in the NHL is pretty hilarious.

Ryan is miscast as a franchise building block, and both his acquisition and extension were the result of desperation - desperation last year to acquire a name after Alfredsson had enough, and desperation this year to keep a player they invested heavily in. I think both decisions were poor. Last offseason was not the time for a two-year rental, and Ryan isn't a guy you build around to the tune of a 7/50+ contract. 3rd tier star for a 3rd tier org.

Must be pretty depressing to cheer for both the Jays AND the Sens. I'm scared to ask what team you support in the NFL .... (likely Raiders or Browns)

Frag Verified Member Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 Not the best contract by the Sens. Still better than the Phaneuf and Clarkson contracts, though.

I agree the trade was more of a PR move then a hockey move but looking back on it the 1st round pick really is the only piece that hurts to give up. But you have to look at the situation right now and if you let an asset walk for nothing in the offseason you look terrible. If you trade him you look terrible because either way it looks like you can't keep players in Ottawa and no one wants to be there. I have no problem signing a great goal scorer who will still have trade value after you sign him, its about keeping an asset. This isn't like baseball where when you sign a free agent his trade value goes down. Ryan probably has more trade value with his contract now then he did as a rental.

Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 Aw jeez Might have to start watching basketball so i at least have something to look forward too.

eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 Jays, Habs, Raps, Vikes Habs and Raps are pretty decent right now. Much more optimistic about the Raptors relative to the Habs tho.

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 Live auction draft with myself, Nox, NJH, and Hurl tonight. As usual, my team is destitute and has a $106 budget, while those cheapskates have like $700 each.

You're going to spend $102 on Jeff Carter and you're going to like it.
