KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2013 Posted December 13, 2013 What are peoples thoughts on Dan Uggla? I know he sucks, but might be worth giving a shot too if we don't bring in anyone else at 2b. Something like Romero + PTBNL (Low Tier Prospect) for Uggla + Cash ($4.4mil) Romero is owed $15 mil + $600k buyout over the next 2 years. Uggla is owed $26 mil Jays get Dan Uggla at $3 mil/year for 2 years Braves save $6 mil and get a low prospect hmm looking at it now maybe we don't even have to toss in the prospect, saving the $6 mil should be enough for the Braves and they take a chance at fixing Romero. This is an all else fails alternative only, pushing Goins to AAA. Definitely shouldn't have to give up a prospect for Uggla. I have looked at this scenario a few times and I just can't see it working out. Uggla is basically JPA but at 2B. Can't field the position, can't get on base. He has more of a track record but it's a hell of a risk to take. Even if he bounces back offensively, I'm not sure I could deal with his butchery at 2B.

Yeah, looking at it more closely now cancel the prospect, and up the cash to $8.4 mil. Jays then get Uggla for $1 mil/year for 2 years, Braves save $2 mil and get a lotto ticket on Romero. Uggla also serves as a Right Power Bat for the bench. Looking at the numbers, Uggla really was the JPA of 2b but did put up atleast 1.8 war a year since 2006. Unlike JPA he does walk, if we can get his AVG back to 230-250 range he would be 1+ war guy.

The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2013 Posted December 13, 2013 http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/will-study-be-starting-point-for-mlb-return-to-montreal/ I support a return to Montreal for baseball and so does Scott Boras it seams. I think if they could get them put in the AL East that would be a bonus. You'd think MLB would be all for it, a Toronto/Montreal rivalry would be good for baseball, similar to the Redsox/Yankees. It's been a while since the league was expanded. If they expanded to 32 teams it would eliminate the necessity for year round interleague play, but they'd still have the option of doing it if they so wanted to.

I'd do Uggla + $ for Romero. He's able to walk, unlike JPA. He actually led the NL in walks in 2012. Last year his BABIP was below his career average, so he should be able to bring his average back up, and his OBP last year was still over .300 during his down year.

Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2013 Posted December 13, 2013 David Ortiz told reporters that his agent is talking with the Red Sox about extending his deal for another year, tweets Rob Bradford of WEEI.com. Ortiz signed a two-year extension with Boston in November 2012 that will take him through the 2014 season.
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 Gavin Floyd close to signing with the Mystery Team, per Baltimore Sun. Let's hope it's us. He would be an interesting depth option.

He would be an interested depth option. If our depth was like it was last year, I'd love it. I question whether he'd really outperform our house options next year though.
SAAviour Verified Member Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 This definitely smells like AA...I don't think I like it if it is.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2013 Author Posted December 14, 2013 His mean projections / 180 would have him at like 2.6 fWAR. If it's cheap, I like it.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 It seems like we have more options available, but some again will get hurt and/or under-perform. I'm not willing to count on Redmond, Drabek, Hutchison, McGowan, Rogers and Happ for anything meaningful. And I'd prefer Nolin and Stroman start in Buffalo, even it's only for a month. If Floyd is healthy and back to pre-2013 form (a big if, but a risk worth taking IMO) then he's better than all of those other options. Yeah, actually after taking another look at the numbers, this could be a great move if the price is only a few million.
SAAviour Verified Member Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 Didn't he have tommy john in May? Maybe if there's a team option attached, I guess in July he can come back and replace morrow when he gets injured...

Maybe if there's a team option attached, I guess in July he can come back and replace morrow when he gets injured... Normal recovery period seems to be ~ 1 year now, sometimes slightly less. There'd be an outside chance he'd be ready coming out of spring. If not, Dustin could start for a month or so, then switch to the pen.

He should come real cheap. I assume there would be a team option if we signed him.
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 Yeah, actually after taking another look at the numbers, this could be a great move if the price is only a few million. Also if you sign a guy like this it makes Mark B a little more expendable
SAAviour Verified Member Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 If it means we move mark b and then sign tanaka then I'm in.
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 just saw on twitter that Tanaka won't be posted. http://www.lonestarball.com/2013/12/13/5209100/rakutan-president-says-tanaka-will-not-be-posted
SAAviour Verified Member Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 Now that tanaka isn't being posted I bet free agent pitchers start to sign real fast.
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/12/gavin-floyd-close-to-signing.html Floyd close to signing. I'd be very interested in rolling the dice on a 1-year deal. Have him as the 5th starter and bump all of our other options down the depth chart. We were talking about this five posts ago lol.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2013 Author Posted December 14, 2013 It's not the Twins or the O's so far. He was very healthy before TJS too, making ~30 starts every year. A few very good seasons. I really like this.

I'm seeing rumours that it's the Blue Jays and it's a 5.5M deal with incentives and a club option for 2015, but still nothing concrete. I too would like this signing, low cost, low risk.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 I have a growing suspicion that this is AA at work. This is typically how he does it. It starts off as a mystery team and then later is revealed as the Jays. Of course, I'm probably wrong. If it's cheap enough, I'm absolutely on board with this.

We know that he's a.) close to signing b.) he's not signing with the O's and c.) he's not signing with the Twins. It's just being heavily rumored that it's the Jays, and it makes a good deal of sense (tried to trade for him last year, Buehrle's team mate, etc). Plus I'd really really like it to happen so there's that.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 I'm seeing rumours that it's the Blue Jays and it's a 5.5M deal with incentives Gonna quote myself here to add that I'm also seeing a club option for 2015.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2013 Author Posted December 14, 2013 Gonna quote myself here to add that I'm also seeing a club option for 2015. Where? I'm not seeing anything more than "mystery team could be the Blue Jays"
SAAviour Verified Member Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 Even the "mystery team could be the jays" is only coming from fans isn't it? Any halfway reliable people saying this?
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 A Floyd signing could probably get me to 60% chub. Sooo... a half-pack of Rolaids?
