  1. No, because viewership dies off dramatically in the extra innings, and even still the amount of ad revenue is not more than they lose in the myriad moves they have to pull afterwards.
  2. This is exactly right! And, even after almost ten years of posting with you (on another site), I wish you'd post more often.
  3. Especially with the trackman data MLB teams are buying from college programs, it’s hilarious they expect us to believe one game will have any impact on where teams draft these kids.
  4. Oh, yah, that’s a good baseball channel. I subscribed last year after watching the Juan Soto video he put out.
  5. Yah, good catch, Orgfiller! Completely forgot about Russell Martin. I even had Darrin Fletcher over Pat Borders for a bit, but left Pat in out of WS legacy/longevity, but Martin is definitely better than both.
  6. It is all very surprising, but it doesn't change my opinion on him as a player.
  7. He’s ‘on the mound’ as the number one SP.
  8. Let's pass the time by taking a page out of Tom Stone's book and come up with our own all-time rosters for the Blue Jays. Starting lineup: 1.2B Roberto Alomar (22.3 bWAR with team) 2. 1B Carlos Delgado (36.8) 3. 3B Josh Donaldson (19.5) 4. OF José Bautista (38.2) 5. DH Edwin Encarnación (25.3) 6. OF Vernon Wells (28.7) 7. OF Jesse Barfield (29.5) 8. SS Tony Fernández (37.5) 9. C Ernie Whitt (19.3) On the mound: SP Roy Halladay (48) Bench: Infield: 1B John Olerud (22.6), 2B Aaron Hill (17.1), 3B Kelly Gruber (16.1), SS Álex González (9.7), C Pat Borders (4.3) Outfield: Devon White (22.3), George Bell (21.3), Lloyd Moseby (26) Utility: Fred McGriff (19.4) Rotation: Dave Stieb (56.8), Jimmy Key (29.6), Pat Hentgen (26.6), Roger Clemens (20.3) Bullpen: Tom Henke (16.8), Duane Ward (10.4), Mark Eichhorn (11.5) Post your Jays all-time rosters!
  9. Jeff Passan is reporting that MLB is going to offer a return-to-play proposal to the players' union within a week, and teams are encouraging players to prepare for a "spring" training that could begin in mid-June and a season that could start in early July, ESPN link here.
  10. I'm not really watching old games, so I've no idea, but you're right they should replay this one today. It's the greatest pitching performance of all time, and it took place during the day at Wrigley Field, and it was against the Houston Astros (who won 102 games that year, led the Killer B's). It checks off so many boxes it should be played on loop all week!
  11. 22 years ago today, on the WGN, I watched Cubs rookie Kerry Wood throw a one-hit, 20-strikeout gem against the Astros (in his fifth career start). I think it's the greatest pitching performance of all time. It's got the highest Game Score in both the Bill James original version and the Tom Tango v2.0. If that's too advanced, just look at something as simple as strikeouts above expectation. The only hit against came in the third inning with a grounder off the glove of a Cubs infielder that I still think should've been called an error. Wood was just the second pitcher in MLB history to strike out 20 in a nine-inning game (Clemens in 1986 and 1996), and only two others have done it since (Randy Johnson in 2001; Max Scherzer in 2016). Outside of Fernando Tatis Sr. hitting two grand slams in the same inning, the 20-strikeout game is perhaps the rarest feat in baseball. It's a shame injuries plagued Wood his whole career, because his 12.6 K/9 that year not only led MLB, it's the sixth-best single-season mark ever.
  12. I mean, do we really want to turn this into another coronavirus thread?
  13. I followed Pendleton's links and did some research on the KBO for everyone who wants the skinny. The league began in 1982 and has 10 teams but no divisions, with teams facing off 16 times each for a 144-game regular season. The level of talent is supposed to be somewhere in between Double-A and Triple-A. I like their playoff format. The fourth- and fifth-place teams face off in a Wild Card round, with the winner advancing to play the third-place team (best-of-five series). The winner of that then faces the second-place team in the semifinals (best-of-five). Finally, the semifinal winner faces the regular season champion in the Korean Series (best-of-seven). Translation: Winning the regular season is huge[/]. The teams: 1. Doosan Bears (reigning champs) Year established: 1982 City: Seoul Korean Series: 6 championships, 7 runners-up MLB comparison → Yankees (very successful, located in largest city) 2. Hanwha Eagles Year established: 1985 City: Daejeon Korean Series: 1 championship, 5 runners-up MLB comparison → Orioles (currently rebuilding, beautiful ballpark) 3. Kia Tigers Year established: 1982 City: Gwangju Korean Series: 11 championships, 0 runners-up (Jordan-esque!) MLB comparison → Cardinals (storied franchise, white and red color scheme) 4. Kiwoom Heroes Year established: 2008 City: Seoul Korean Series: 0 championships, 2 runners-up MLB comparison → Rays (low payroll, roofed stadium) 5. KT Wiz Year established: 2013 City: Suwon Korean Series: N/A MLB comparison → Padres (expansion team, no titles, larger city to the north) 6. LG Twins Year established: 1982 City: Seoul Korean Series: 2 championships, 4 runners-up MLB comparison → Angels/Mets (second most popular team in big city) 7. Lotte Giants Year established: 1975 City: Busan Korean Series: 2 championships, 3 runners-up MLB comparison → Cubs (rich history, strong fan support, not as successful as you'd expect) 8. NC Dinos Year established: 2011 City: Changwon Korean Series: 0 championships, 1 runner-up MLB comparison → Brewers (Eric Thames played for both, on the rise) 9. Samsung Lions Year established: 1982 City: Daegu Korean Series: 8 championships, 10 runners-up MLB comparison → Giants (won most titles last decade, struggling lately) 10. SK Wyverns Year established: 2000 City: Incheon Korean Series: 4 championships, 4 runners-up MLB comparison → Red Sox (perennial contenders, lost biggest star in offseason) And, hell, I might tune in for the bat flips alone:
  14. Grant, you forget that summer is fast approaching. Sunlight has been shown to cut the survival half-life of the virus on surfaces from 6 hours to 2 minutes, and in aerosols from 60 minutes to 1.5 minutes. Remember the streets of Wuhan being sprayed with disinfectant in January and February? Summer will essentially do the same thing to our streets. https://www.washingtonpost.com/weather/2020/04/23/lab-study-coronavirus-summer-weather/?fbclid=IwAR2vNCFC6P9QZfs3eCr7mCA704UOLoy1wLkbx6jh9NhSfw3K6NeHiMYYh1g There will be baseball this summer, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's played everywhere.
  15. Having the Dodgers and the Astros in the same division would make for some must-see TV.
  16. lol, I know, me too!
  17. ... Do you like his swing?
  18. lol, I got the names confused. Bob Barker was hilarious in 'Happy Gilmore,' though!
  19. Best highlight from that season, easily I remember immediately going to YouTube to look up the scene in Major League 2 where Wille Mays Hayes jumps over Parkman . My brother and I used to watch that movie all the time as kids (on VHS, no less) with our cousins and the kids from the neighbourhood, and then we'd go out and play ball all day. I remember I'd try to call my shot, like Hayes, and I remember my brother used to always shimmy in the batters box because he saw Parkman do it in the movie. Might be my favourite baseball movie. (And Bob Barker is hilarious in it, too.)
  20. Watkins, Boston's replay guy, was also a "key participant" behind the Apple Watch scandal less than a year before, and so that's supposedly why he was suspended through 2021. But with two scandals in as many seasons, there's no way the front office and manager didn't know what Watkins was up to, and yet the top brass walk away scot-free... way to send a message, Rob! And putting it out the day before the NFL draft was slick.
  21. No, Cora wasn't suspended for his involvement with the Red Sox scandal, but instead for his part in the Astros scandal. It was actually a delayed announcement by MLB because the investigation into the Red Sox, and into Cora, was still ongoing at the time they announced the Astros' punishment.
