  1. Santander was hitting much better for a few weeks preceding the shoulder injury. Hopefully he can rediscover this form at the plate in relatively short order.
  2. Santander is kinda like a switch hitting version of Joe Carter. You can reasonably expect 30'ish home runs, 90-100 RBI's, below average but passable corner outfield defense, low OBP's etc.
  3. Lukes is a very solid ballplayer on both sides of the ball. Ideally the team would have a right handed platoon mate to partner him with as hasn't had any success in a very small sample against left handed pitching.
  4. Kloffenstein and Macko have both made rehab starts in the low minors so hopefully they can be depth starter options in the not too distant future as well.
  5. I recall this started being mentioned a few weeks ago that MLB was looking to shrink the shadow zone to promote higher umpire accuracy. MLB claimed that they sent out memos to all of the team's general managers and to the players association, but there doesn't seem to be any executives or players who knew about this change when asked about it.
  6. I can only assume they don't want him to play in a situation where a night game is immediately followed by a day game. Perhaps he'll still be available later in the game as a pinch hitter/defensive replacement if the situation warrants it.
  7. I had a look at the Statcast box score and Swanson got BABIP'd in that game. None of the hits were hard hit, and he gave up an average exit velocity of only 70 MPH. Burr was hit much harder by comparison as he allowed an average exit velocity of 97.5 MPH among 3 hard hit balls.
  8. Protection is kind of a ******** premise anyway.
  9. It's hard to say whether the shoulder was a long term concern for Daulton. I do recall it was mentioned he initially hurt it diving for a ball in the field, and it was further aggravated when he collided with Pete Alonso when on the basepath. I suspect the increased swing speeds could be a case of Daulton strengthening his overall shoulder and supporting muscles as part of the post surgery rehabilitation, and retraining his swing afterwards may have unlocked a bit of new athleticism as well. Hopefully he maintains the swing speed gains moving forward.
  10. In a perfect world Altuve felt like this guy's unrealistic best case scenario outcome. He's certainly an interesting prospect, as he's clubbed 10 home runs in his last 160 PA in high A Vancouver since his arrival there in August last year. If he can ever find a way to stay on the field more consistently he offers a lot of potential upside with the bat.
  11. I was a little concerned about how the shoulder surgery was going to effect Varsho at the plate, but he's come back swinging the bat harder than ever as a Blue Jay at 75.7 MPH average up to this point of the season.
  12. I was amazed that there wasn't more heated competition for his services when he reached free agency. I don't know how long he's going to be able to keep up this type of production but he's continued to get better at the plate in his 30's.
  13. I think Barger has both of those guys beat in terms of raw velocity. We'll get a more complete picture once Barger has enough throws to qualify. Rolen had the best throwing accuracy of any player I've ever watched, it was amazing how he could dive to snag a screaming liner, hop to his feet and fire a strike to first base every single time.
  14. He also fired off rockets with his arm as well. He easily has the strongest infield arm I can recall seeing with the Blue Jays.
  15. If Khal Stephen keeps rolling he could start to find his way onto top 100 lists as well.
  16. It is starting to appear as though Barger is experiencing a breakout season, but I agree it's a bit early to make that determination at this point. I'm very encouraged with how he's slashed the chase rate by 10% prior to last season and subsequently dropped the strikeout rate by 10% as well. We shall see how sustainable these improvements are but it's remarkable that Barger managed to halve his chase rate compared to AAA prior to his callup. With how hard he's been hitting the ball combined with the underlying metrics he is giving himself a very good shot at sustained success at the plate.
  17. Yeah Tucker is going to be a awfully tough sign given the offensive improvements he's made the last few seasons. Schwarber would be a nice free agency target although that would force the team to use one of Schwarber/Santander in the field with regularity.
  18. I don't think we know what the end of season talent level for this team is just yet. I think it's more complicated than simply extrapolating win/loss record or run differential on May 11. Ultimately I think you are dramatically overestimating the likely future impact of moving mid range prospects out for reinforcements, or bringing back mid range prospects for expiring contracts. I don't think either of these will have a dramatic impact on the team's ability to compete several years down the road.
  19. Not necessarily. The team has typically been pretty hesitant to send out premium assets at the trade deadline. I don't think any of the trade deadline deals had any tangible effect of reducing the overall competitiveness in subsequent seasons as it's typically been low end prospects moved out in the deadline deals. The only major deadline deal I can recall with this front office was the Berrios deal, and that brought back a long term asset that improved the team's ability to compete vs hanging onto SWR and Martin.
  20. I'm firmly ready to return to talking baseball. The 3 consecutive victories have been much needed as I was all but ready to tune out the team completely, particularly after the typically reliable tandem of Garcia and Hoffman both hit rough patches. I am hopeful that the offense is starting to turn the corner at this point, hopefully the Santander issue isn't something that holds him out for very long as he was finally starting to heat up at the plate.
  21. This is a gross oversimplification of the problems at hand. The entire world's economy was largely churning along nicely with the US as the standard bearer until a silver spoon simpleton without even a cursory understanding of basic economics was elected as president. Canada didn't arbitrarily decide to start a trade war against itself so the current issues aren't remotely approaching being completely self inflicted. This is pretty basic stuff but given the doozies you tend to post here I'm not surprised you would fail to grasp the basics.
  22. Kirk had a big game as well with 4 hits.
  23. Yeah series victories are a must at this point at minimum. The team has managed to hang slightly below the .500 mark despite the extended struggles. The team just hasn't managed to click on all cylinders yet, as the offense consisted of a bunch of slap hitting in the early going while the rotation and leverage relief were top notch. Middle relief was also a big issue in the early going. During the protracted losing streak the offense completely dried up and the pitching staff struggled as a whole. Recently the offense has been picking up but the leverage group really started to suck, most likely due to accumulated fatigue due to overuse.
  24. The team badly needed those victories after 3 nut punch losses in a row.
  25. I don't know if bringing in Yariel Rodriguez with the bases loaded was really a better alternative though. Ultimately the team desperately needs more arms that can be trusted in leverage situations assuming they are going to be involved in a lot of close games moving forward.
