  1. TBF the rotation will look very different in a year or two. Roark and Anderson are just placeholder innings eaters until we know which prospects will stick, Shoemaker will get injured, and Shun will likely end up as an opener / reliever.
  2. TBF the Dodgers prioritised Cole then Bumgarner - they probably wouldn't have wanted to be out of the running for either by signing Ryu early. I'd actually read Ryu's comments more that he would like to stay but is a bit disappointed that the Dodgers didn't make him their number one choice. I wouldn't rule out him going back to them based on what's been reported so far.
  3. I mean I agree that in a vacuum such a deal would be reasonable, but don't agree that either Cleveland would see it as a better deal or that it would have been a good deal for us. Kluber isn't guaranteed to be an ace any more, even if we assume he comes back fine from injury he only has 2 years of control so doesn't fit our timeline, and Kay and Alford isn't necessarily a can't miss better deal for Cleveland (considering that Alford has zero trade value and they seem to really like Clase).
  4. Kay is one of the most likely of our prospects to end up as a long term part of our rotation so I doubt our front office would have made that deal.
  5. When someone falls of a cliff that much while still relatively young, there's often personal problems involved. He didn't have injuries. Drugs, family, depression, who knows? Or maybe it was just random, he didn't really play much after starting the first few months ice cold.
  6. The second part is the important bit - AL East = DH and the Yankees & Red Sox.
  7. I just don’t get this board’s obsession with Ryu. He doesn’t fit our timeline and there’s no way he’s coming here on just a 3 year deal. Think of it this way. If Ryu was a free agent next year instead, would you want to sign him when he’d be just turning 34 at the beginning of the season? Your answer would surely be “depends on what he does in 2020” right? Let someone who is in win now mode (and therefore 2020 is much more important to them) overpay him instead.
  8. 5th pick, not competing this year, 26 man roster, they must really not have liked any of the available pitchers!
  9. I wouldn’t be surprised if we just signed a few minor league deals with vets and called it a day for free agency. I’m a little bit concerned that there’s been no rumours about what we’re asking for Giles - but maybe we’re just waiting for the free agent market to sort itself out, then sell to the highest bidder who has blown their budget elsewhere (Nats and Angels for example).
  10. TBF Roark hasn't been signed as an investment, he's here to eat innings.
  11. Yeah exactly. If he was much better, we wouldn't have got him on the same AAV or years. Even in the worst case where he completely implodes in the AL East, it has virtually zero impact on the flexibility of the payroll.
  12. TBF he's been getting consistently worse every year.
  13. I think we've found the slogan for this holiday season's stop drink driving campaign!
  14. Do you know what "really" means?
  15. Its going to be very interesting to see what contract Josh Donaldson now gets.
  16. Perfect signing to go with the return of Ohtani the pitcher and Adell's promotion later in the year. They really, really need Ryu to complete the off-season though.
  17. No one else really wanted Roark so we only had to overpay a little bit. He's a vet innings eater so that we don't have to start the season with 3 young guys in the rotation, and if enough prospects develope so that we don't need him anymore, it's only a 2 year deal. Exactly the kind of signing we were always going to make.
  18. In what world did people think the Yankees wouldn’t spend? The last time they were making noise about cutting payroll they ended up trading for Stanton, haha.
  19. I'd argue that Cole to the Angels would have been better for baseball - but if they end up with Rendon and Ryu as consolation prizes they'll still have had a good offseason.
  20. You need to ask for a thesaurus for Xmas.
