  1. I don't know what's been more surprising this season - Liverpool being historically good (only 2 points dropped in 23 games has never been done before in any of the top European leagues), or Leicester being easily the 3rd best team. It's been a great season, bit of a shame that Liverpool are running away with the title, but everything else (including relegation places) is close and exciting. I'm more confident about my Man City for the Champions League prediction now that they can concentrate on that over the league!
  2. Yeah at this point expecting them to get in is idiotic, there’s a very real chance neither does. They are just too controversial unfortunately.
  3. The most disappointing thing is that Bonds only got an extra 1% increase this year. There are just too many voters that will never tick that box for him to get in.
  4. He must have known they were doing it, but yeah he wasn't directly implicated in the report so IMO he should be ok. It's not like he'll be doing post game interviews so there probably won't be much media pressure either.
  5. Because the NFL is widely popular in the US - if it didn't dominate sports coverage it'd get more criticism. NFL is boring as s***, but it gets hyped up, has a short season, and is very patriotic.
  6. Yeah exactly. People like to watch elite sport, and in the vast majority of sports, that means watching the top level men. Certain sports can be basically different (like basketball - college, NBA and WNBA are all varied enough that someone could watch all 3) but some sports are significantly worse for spectators when the players aren't elite and IMO tennis is especially bad for this.
  7. I'm going to be in Houston when the season opens. I'll go to a game or two and I guarantee there will be signs held up by the fans saying something like "worth it"! It'll be an interesting crowd atmosphere though!
  8. Yeah it is interesting! Baseball's repetitiveness and glut of games has always emphasised the stats over actually watching every game, and we now have more stats than ever before. I don’t think baseball is doomed to become a minor sport in North America, but I struggle to see how it can become more popular (especially outside of the existing markets) without radical change - which will never happen.
  9. Tennis isn't a the best spectator sport anyway, but at least at the elite (men's) level you get to see some fantastic shots and play. McEnroe is 100% right that even Serena Williams wouldn't be a top 100 player in the men's game.
  10. Women's tennis is the worst sport in the world.
  11. TBF the player who is most in danger of losing out is Valera (who is s***). It'd be annoying if Panik was taking game time in MLB or AAA from Espinal, but even if that happens it's probably because Panik plays well and might be able to be flipped at the deadline, or that Espinal sucks anyway. As others have said, he's a low risk depth signing.
  12. The global appeal of sport comes from the emotional connection fans feel to teams and players and moments. But a large part of baseball has always been about statistics. Though IMO the prevalence of analytics does only appeal to a certain kind of nerd (most of us here are like that but the average “casual” sports fan isn’t) and things like there being a definitive answer to whether a player is good or not isn’t necessarily good for the fans. Oh you like your team’s CF? Well actually this spreadsheet tells us that’s he’s only the 8th best player on the team. The clinical nature of baseball encourages non hardcore fans to mainly ignore watching the regular season (and instead play fantasy baseball).
  13. I've always said that the number of games is a bad thing as hype comes from fans and media looking forward to and then reviewing games, which doesn't really happen in the regular season when teams play every day. But you are 100% right that kids playing the sport are more likely to then want to watch elite players. Baseball has got an advantage over American Football because it's safer, and over basketball because you don't need to be a physical freak. Unfortunately baseball needs quite expensive specialist equipment, and you spend quite a lot of time not doing anything (unless you are a pitcher). More youth initiatives, and better marketing of potential heroes, is the way to increase fan interest ten years down the line.
  14. It's laughable that you can pretend to know enough about her to confidently state it's a PR exercise. A quick Google search reveals she has a masters in sports management and has worked for the Giants since 2014. But yeah, she's definitely only been promoted because she's a woman!
  15. Not specifically highlighting this example or you, but that is the kind of attitude that is bad for sports in general. If the reason something doesn’t change and evolve is tradition (and not because the current version is the best method or a new version is flawed) then the risk is you get left behind.
  16. Just wait until next year's CBA negotiations result in a player strike. If any games are lost.......
  17. "Doing things the right way" "pride in being a leader" "integrity" "not who I am" f*** off Carlos, the report implicated you more than any other player: "Approximately two months into the 2017 season, a group of players, including Carlos Beltrán, discussed that the team could improve on decoding opposing teams’ signs and communicating the signs to the batter. Cora arranged for a video room technician to install a monitor displaying the center field camera feed immediately outside of the Astros’ dugout."
  18. Even if there's any truth to these rumours it'd need the MLB investigation to be reopened to give additional bans. It does make that decision look even worse though.
  19. Haha this should be amazing:
  20. Sounds like both teams fielded weakened teams in the end.
