I suspect the quiet response from Atkins/ Shapiro in the aftermath is indications they know they were played and it super stings for them! Now they need to clear their minds today and tomorrow and really f***ing focus on what’s best for this club, and if they want the targets they want they need to open the f***ing check book or the off-season will look like a failure for them. Atkins/ Shapiro are between a rock and a hard place to be honest! Do they fail on other free agents offers and Jays open first month of the season with a bad month and everyone in the media roasts them about not doing enough! Both have to answer now to the fans, Rogers Board of Directors, and commitment from players on the field! Both Atkins/ Shapiro are on the “hot seat” whether they like it or not and only option to recover is go all-in on players they want to get! If they don’t, we may see a charging of the guard for Atkins/ Shapiro come October 2024 if Jays fumble or don’t make playoffs.

Gausman was equal in value of Robbie Ray so I think they liked the fork ball versus max effort guy who could not sustain the max effort forever. So I believe internal valuation was accurate! Ryu contract was justified on his previous success as was Springer! Problem if you remember both these free agents waited very long in process to sign with Jays wanting more money but settled on Jays the highest offer they received. In saying that, these were not “bidding wars” with other teams Jays valued then exactly as they wanted and I other team valued them and yes maybe an overpay. But definitely not an overpay in what I term as a “bidding war”. If Jays get in bidding war over Japanese pitcher or Bellinger they will NOT overpay in those instances. Best they could do now is go all in on Bellinger and Yamamoto but these will be bidding wars with other teams so Jays brass will be brides maids! Bellinger = 7 year 240 million Yamamoto = 7 years 200+ million.
-
No not really… I think there is some ongoing metrics database they use to value free agents internally and they stick to their internal valuation rating system! If Bellinger is rated internally as a contract of max 5 years 175 million and the bidding market dictates 200+ they won’t bend period!!! You will never see Jays brass overpay based on internal valuation system! They will NEVER trump another team in a bidding war just to get that “one player” they need to put them over the top. So if bidding war starts for Bellinger, J.D. Martinez, Japanese pitchers Jays will be used again by agents to drive up bidding war to max value for each free agents. That’s my opinion and I stand by it!!! You will NEVER hear that Atkins and Shapiro overpaid for x and y free agents… That is the Cleveland model they carried to Toronto!!!
-
Just imagine… if… Atkins tries to get all 4 of those you mentioned and all other teams outbid the Jays based on Atkins/ Shapiro’s perceived value of what each free agent is worth 👀. That’s always been these two dorks f***ing greatest weakness that they themselves think they are smarter then the other 29 GM’s and the sports agents… “Oh we tried, but none of those free agents wanted to come play for Toronto”. No…. You f***ers never made an offer these guys could not pass up!!! Plain and simple money talks and ******** walks to the highest bidder!!!
-
I know there have been significant reports that Atkins made multiple trips to Japan and heavily scouted Yamamoto. Man would I would do f***ing hate like seriously hate if Jays went all in to get Yamamoto and fell short again to the Dodgers who sign him… One would think Yamamoto is on Dodgers radar but argument could be had that Yamamoto might not want to be under the shadow of Ohtani and Betts and create his own cult following! But seriously, if Dodgers or Yanks sign Yamamoto does not give me a good feeling about watching baseball when Jays had the money and fell short on Soto, Yamamoto, Ohtani.
-
Not trying b to stick it to Jays, just frustrated at Atkins and Shapiro allowing themselves to get played… f*** did they actually think the Dogers were going to be allowed to be outbid?! Soto makes Yanks way better and they should have focused on him!!! Nothing in the market compares to Ohtani and Soto’s impact bats! This whole fiasco will cause major and I mean major fan disappointment to the point that fans for 2024 have already written off the Blue Jays as not being winners or a possible playoff team. It is the reality unfortunately… how do Atkins and Shapiro recover?? I think there is a couple of ways, sign the Japanese pitcher if they can and invest in his youth at age 25 for 10 year contract and guarantee Jays have solid pitching foundation for next 4-5 years. Go get J.D for DH and sign Bellinger. Oh and one more note….. the deferred money the Dodgers agreed to with Ohtani means they are 100% going after the Japanese pitcher to dominate the Asian media market!!!
-
I have to really agree with that statement! I think Atkins and Shapiro should be gone next season, they never had a chance to get Ohtani to leave LA, and let Soto slip away… that being said he will go to free agency anyways hoping to get 500 million. But I will not be watching Jays in hopes Chapman bat comes alive, and clapping every time he makes a defensive play 😞. Worst problem now is that every free agent out there things their own value has increased because of Ohtani contract. Every free agent will want 300 million plus 🙄. Totally f***ed up market this year! What will be worse is to watch the Dodgers now drop another 300 million on the Japanese pitcher 😡😡😡
-
Seeing Yanks get Soto and if Jays loosing out on Ohtani might more depressing then watching the Jays lose in playoffs the last 2 years!!! Loosing out in Soto which they obviously thought would be plan B to the Yanks must have Atkins on the edge of his seat! With all this f***ing hype and effort and loose out on two best bats available in NOT recoverable from a hyped fan base perspective and will cost Atkins and probably Shapiro their jobs at the end of next season. You don’t dangle 500 million plus and left with a limp dick in your hand to the Roger’s board of directors who told you to go get the guy!!! Seeing the Yanks get Soto and hurting us this season will f***ing sting even worse!!! If Ohtani wanted to sign with Jays and offer so sweet he would have already! He is using Jays to sweeten deals elsewhere. Atkins should have secured Soto regardless for Manoah and Schieder maybe, then flipped others afterwards. Stupid to think Yanks would be left with their pants down watching the Jays getting better in the process. Atkins and Shapiro need to be gone outplayed by other GM’s all the time!!!
-
Ya la about to get Soto, Ohtani spurns Jays… Just watch if Atkins and Co. are left with holding their cocks in their hand 🙄. Nothing worse to see then Atkins and Shapiro panic shopping on left overs looking like the laughing stock by the rest of the GM’s for not pulling trigger on Doto from the beginning. Just watch!!! tons we tried out best, no you did not cause as we all f***ing know if you don’t offer 25% more in U.S. dollars to any free agent they don’t come to Canada idiots!!! Not about competitive bid. Gillick knew this in 92-93 when Jays had the highest payroll.
-
Only way Ohtani signs with Jays is for 650 million for 10 years plus 10 year perk for entire penthouse floor to house 20+ people in best downtown building for all his immediate family to visit and stay for free in Toronto. In addition 5% revenue sharing for TV endorsement deal for all broadcasts in Japan! Voila… he will sign in TO!

I just caught sight of Jay Jackson. Glad to see that!
-
Feel bad for Jay Jackson!!! Should be celebrating in the locker room spraying Champagne as well. He came up big 5-6 games for the Kays this year.

Another shitty GDT Sept 17 to extend the win streak
PhillyBlueJay replied to G-Snarls's topic in Game Thread Archive
f***ing Chapman, swings at everything high and just out of the strike zone every time! Then gets behind and can’t pull the trigger on a hittable pitch! No loss from the bat with the guy gone as free agent!!! -
Well better to see the season over now as this is not a playoff team period and we all knew this two months ago hoping Vladdy would turn it around… But holes in lineup were never going to get them anywhere with dominant pitching in the playoffs. Rather be out of it now then heartache last couple of games in season then everyone mad saying some of the easy win games we lost this season. Jays could seriously stock the farm with trades this off-season and be in contention again in 2-3 years.
-
Season over and you want to watch the f***ing character of this team just watch them roll o we Ann’s die and not even score any runs this game!!! Blow this f***ing team up in the off-season and trade Vladdy and Bo!!! Just get what you can get and let the new wave of young guys play. It is madness to keep status quo in the off-season and this is not a 1-2 player fix but a whole new core needs to come in. Trade our starters rebuild this team with a new young core. I’d love to sign Bo but the guy is just playing out his service time, never glowing review from Bo on wanting to sign and stay he is going to biggest market team like Yankees, Mets, Dodgers.

GDT: 2/3 Cleveland Guardians @ Toronto Blue Jays (3:07 et)
PhillyBlueJay replied to Omar's topic in Game Thread Archive
Give me your point of view! Don’t give me ******** WAR of 2.0 because of his defensive runs saved metrics and his batted balls in play at 95 mph or more than his previous years 57% metric because he is swinging for the fences in his free agent year!!! His f***ing worth as a hitter is absolute s*** based on damage created by hits, run driven in, and on base percentage has created very little damage to opponents this season. Since Chapman’s sensational start to the season (May 15 time frame … he’s batted .212/.302/.373 (88 wRC+). -

100% no thunder and poor situational skills. First 6 weeks of season he was hitting and Vladdy was getting protection in the lineup. Since then Chapman has to be the least clutch player on this team and this has impacted Vladdy significantly in May/June/July with no protection. Chapman’s batting order position of 4-5 has had the single most negative impact than any other player on the team for RISP. -
Fat f***…. Story of our season right f***ing there!!! If he was in shape he would have made it, if Kirk was in shape he would be hitting better and not hitting into so many double plays!!! Management needs to say if both show up in spring training out of shape you will start season in AAA!!! What’s the point to have these two f***s causing us to loose more games and go into next season at status quo!!!
-
Once again Vladdy swings at ball slightly above strike zone 🙄
-
Vladdy needs to be moved down to 7th in batting order. Without sitting him it still sends a message and keep him there until he gets hot! He needs to understand the strike zone and situational hitting. He is not hurt he just feels he can hit everything with power, he is not keeping his mindset of only swinging at balls in the strike zone. First 2 seasons they league was figuring him out and he had good protection hitting behind him. Last two years the league figured him out to throne junk left and right of strike zone he will swing regardless and will not have impactful damage. Factor in Chapman being below replacement level player since May 15 with the bat, Vladdy becomes no threat at all at the plate!

GDT: 2/2 Phillies @ Jays (Wednesday 7:07 ET)
PhillyBlueJay replied to JaysAllMighty's topic in Game Thread Archive
Well some would agree those two players match up fill 3rd base next year and slugger in the outfield. I just think of Pat Gillick trading Fred Mcgriff and Tony Fernandez for Joe Carter and Roberto Alomar. Was a huge gamble on Gillick to do this considering Mcgriff was top AL leader in home runs and RBI’s and Fernandez a former all star. There was no WAR back then to dertermine value like today but Gillick saw potential in Alomar and Carter was an RBI guy. Gillick did this trade not for player production but just saw the team in 1990-1991 needed a change in attitude and chemistry. Same can be said for this team in 2023, not a team that can win it all but a significant shake up of team chemistry! Would Padres trade Soto and Machado probably not, but I’m sure it would be a close match with 3 years left of Bo and Vladdy with Soto only having 2 years left and Machado huge contract off the books for other free agents for Padres. Obviously Padres chemistry not working the best either so…
