  1. I wouldn't bring either back, seriously. Bautista is 35, and go take a look at Encarnacion's plate-discipline metrics (swing %, contact %, whiff %) over the past three years: he's regressing.
  2. The media here is such s***, no wonder all the sports teams are constant disappointments: the front office guys are probably closet alcoholics from being obliged to interact with these people. Got to love the token David Price question. I wished so badly that Atkins had responded with: "Dude, he pitched in 15 total games here."
  3. I can't be the only one that thinks that LaCava looks like a 60 year old Lesbian, right? Sorry Tony.
  4. LaCava doesn't even want to be the GM, it is so obvious. He's clearly happy being behind the scenes in the "Assistant GM" role. For Shapiro, there really isn't any benefit to waiting a year before finding a GM. Its obviously in his best interest to start reshaping his front office ASAP.
  5. Great logic! Excellent use of exclamation marks! A team would surely give up a pick to sign Mark Buehrle!
  6. Probably because paying Buehrle ~$16 million next season would be a horrendous waste of money.
  7. Surely AA had very little if anything to do with the drafting & signing of a 5th round pick.
  8. McCown is definitely known for his insider baseball information...../sarcasm.
  9. He absolutely was. Franklin Barreto as well,
  10. The story? He was very good at his job. Big, big loss here.
  11. ...through strategies that are now no longer possible. I don't understand why people just assume that we'll be able to rebuild the system in 1-2 drafts (like before) when we can no longer go out and acquire multiple picks and accumulate large bonus pools. The very nature of fielding a winning team means that we will now not only draft near the bottom, but we'll also have among the smallest allocated bonus pools. Just look at how our most recent draft turned out with no extra picks and no extra money allocated to our bonus pool: only a couple of guys look legitimately interesting, and I'm not sure how many of those (if any) have actual impact upside. We did however continue our tradition of botching a top selection on a kid that didn't end up signing, which means that our haul this year ranks in the bottom half league wide.
  12. He doesn't strike me as a GM personality at all, which is probably why he declined the Orioles and why he's still kicking around in the same position.
  13. Who was that woman reporter? Totally obvious she knew nothing about baseball: "Hey, are you going to sign David Price?", its like she spent 10 minutes reading over the narratives before the press conference started.
  14. He is named INTERIM GM. While it wouldn't surprise me if he stuck, this point needs to be addressed.
  15. Except for the time he let Bautista hit a game-tying HR off Madson with Wade Davis standing around in the bullpen....
  16. Danny Salazar is 6-feet, 185 pounds. He's actually significantly less muscular than Stroman, which would make him an even bigger threat to "wear down". And its not "analytics" which suggest that smaller pitchers won't last as starters. That is purely traditional "scouting". Analytics tell you that if a guy puts up the required metrics, it doesn't matter if he's 5'7 or 6'7. It is traditional scouting which is enamored with "tall, strong pitchers", or "guys that look like athletes", etc.
  17. Indians fans can't seem to understand that when your team is bottom 5 in payroll, you aren't very likely to be competing for championships or even the playoffs on a year-to-year basis.
  18. Yup. It is a giant stretch of imagination to come to that conclusion. If they wanted someone to reduce payroll, then why show any interest in Kenny Williams who has had some of the highest payrolls in the league during his time with the White Sox? They wanted Shapiro because he is an accomplished, experienced, and highly regarded executive.
  19. His stock will never be higher. Its pretty good timing if he wants to cash out on this wave of success.
  20. Atkins interviewed for the Angels GM job a month ago. A pitcher for Cleveland from 1995 to 1999 (LINK), Atkins was named the director of player development for the Indians in 2006, after having served as the director of Latin American operations for three years prior. In his development role, he oversaw all aspects of player development, including Cleveland's six minor-league affiliates, as well as their Latin American program in the Dominican Republic. In 2014, Atkins was promoted to VP of player personnel. All in all, Ross Atkins has been a part of the Indians organization for over 15 years. He has also received praise from Cleveland's GM Chris Antonetti, who sees him as a future GM candidate. Well, the future is now, apparently.
  21. None of this matters, seriously. You think the White Sox didn't have an inkling of thought that Melky Cabrera might tank before they threw $40 million at him? To no one's surprise he was worth -0.3 WAR this season. $30-40 million over a 3 year commitment isn't much to a team that is feeling the pressure to compete. Every team in the league needs pitching; at worst you get a #5 starter out of Estrada with the hopes that he's found more in the tank and maybe he's able to outperform his projections for a year or two like he has this season. This guy has had good seasons in the past and he's now also shown that he's not going to fall apart emotionally under pressure.
  22. Of course he'd decline. This guy is 32 and coming off an absurd year; he's not going to be banking on taking $16 million over 1 year when he'll pretty easily get a $30-40 million contract that will let him comfortably ride out his career worry free. I'm sure his agent is well aware that he's playing in a launching-pad stadium and that it would therefore be stupid for him to get greedy and risk trying to repeat what he's done this year in hopes of cashing out again after 2016.
