  3. This was a fun episode, the draft will be very interesting on wednesday. I can really appreciate Alan’s skepticism on these prospects, it created very interesting discussions. e.g. Hancock and Gonzales being underrated due to questionable reasons, or how Max Meyer and Zac Veen’s profiles can be seen as scary risky instead of upside. And I really appreciate Mike being there to provide his take on the draft, despite his pc breaking down. This episode was pretty much recorded on a whim with minimal preparation, but if we look past the technical issues there’s a ton of quality discussion here. It was a long and thorough episode, so I’ll go over the pod again and provide some time stamps.

  6. A few BA scouting reports of guys to consider for picks 42, 77, 106, 136 College Arms: Prep and Juco Arms: A couple interesting side notes: - Bryce Jarvis threw a perfect game for Duke earlier this spring - Pitching metrics supposedly love Clayton Beeter and Cole Henry - Burl Carraway is the top relief pitching prospect in college - Masyn Winn and Tanner Witt are two-way players - Tanner Witt sounds like a Kendall Williams/Adam Kloffenstein type profile - Justin Lange has ridiculous velocity for a high school arm - Daxton Fulton was considered the best prep LHP before tommy john surgery, first round talent - Connor Phillips was drafted by the Blue Jays in 2019 and returned to college - Luke Little is a lefty Juco arm that recently hit 105 mph in bullpen session:
  7. Max Meyer on MLB Tonight was asked about the grip on his slider:
  8. Just saw Keith Law’s draft ranking update, the ranking is 100 players. https://theathletic.com/1850996/2020/06/06/keith-laws-big-board-ranking-the-2020-mlb-drafts-top-100-prospects/
  9. Good interviews here from spring 2020: Alek Manoah: Simeon Woods-Richardson: Adam Kloffenstein: Kendall Williams:
  10. Jim Callis video interview with Zac Veen: https://www.mlb.com/video/zac-veen-on-draft-stock-more MLB Tonight breakdown of Zac Veen with Harold Reynolds: https://www.mlb.com/video/breaking-down-zac-veen?t=most-popular Jim Callis video interview with Max Meyer: https://www.mlb.com/video/max-meyer-on-routine-draft
  11. https://www.mlb.com/news/2020-mlb-draft-max-meyer Apparently Max Meyer was recently measured at 6-1, 201 lbs, that looks a bit better than 6-0, 180. And though he has hit 100-101 mph in games, he typically sits 96. Both his parents were athletes and Max was also in his HS hockey team. I’m not sure how much more Toronto this pick can get.
  12. Owen Caissie in the 5th round is an option. For those wondering about the slot values: Toronto Blue Jays pool: $9,716,500 #5 ) $6,180,700 (@64% of pool) #42) $1,771,100 (@18%) #77) $805,600 (@8%) #106) $549,000 (@6%) #136) $410,100 (@4%) Undrafted players can sign for up to $20,000 only, not negotiable. The first $100,000 will be advanced after signing. Then half the remainder paid in 2021 and the last half in 2022, this is both for tax purposes and to assist teams with cash flow due to season suspension.
  13. The chat ended pretty quickly after that one. I think Carlos lost a bit of faith in humanity.
  14. https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/2020-mlb-draft-prospects-chat-6520/ Another weekly draft chat with Collazo has started, I’ll just post a few good ones as I see them, these can get really long and a lot of the Q’s are not relevant to our pick.
  15. We typically had poor results in the draft when playing it “safe”, and ironically our best picks recently have been the “risky with higher upside” guys. I agree with Boxy here, there isn’t really a “safe” pick, anyone in any draft could be a dud. Might as well swing for the fences by drafting high upside and best talent. When we drafted safe: Deck McGuire, Jeff Hoffman, Max Pentecost, Jon Harris, TJ Zeuch, Logan Warmoth When we took upside: Noah Syndergaard, Aaron Sanchez, Bo Bichette, Nate Pearson, Jordan Groshans, James Paxton (didn’t sign)
  16. Boxy isn’t gonna like those comps Max Meyer’s delivery is actually quite similar to Walker Buehler.
  17. https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/baseball-america-2020-mlb-staff-draft/ Baseball America had a staff writers two-round mock draft with Carlos Collazo, J.J. Cooper, Ben Badler, Teddy Cahill, Josh Norris, Mark Chiarelli and Chris Trenkle. Mark Chiarelli selected for the Blue Jays and drafted #5 Zac Veen and #42 Bobby Miller. A brief run down of the first round in this BA mock: 1. Torkelson 2. Martin 3. Lacy 4. Hancock 5. Veen 6. Gonzales 7. Detmers 8. Hendrick 9. Mitchell 10. Meyer 11. PCA 12. Kjerstad 13. Hassell 14. Kelley 15. Abel 16. Bailey 17. Crochet 18. Ginn 19. Cavalli 20. Howard 21. Burns 22. Dingler 23. Soderstrom 24. C. Martin 25. Wilcox 26. Walker 27. Bitsko 28. Wells 29. Loftin
  18. The NBA schedule is bizarre. I guess they’ll finish the season and playoffs in Aug-Oct, squeeze a draft in, then start another season in December.
  19. Is this the mini-tournament to determine the 8th seeds during october?
  20. Mason’s sources are pretty legit, and goes in-line of Jim Callis reporting the Jays have Max Meyer over Emerson Hancock on their board. If Mason’s draft board prediction is true, it’s kinda weird there is one possible scenario we can run away with Austin Martin at no. 5 which would be fantastic. But if none of the under-slotting happens ahead of #5, we’ll have a chance to draft Zac Veen. The most likely scenario is both will be gone and we’ll go with Nick Gonzales or Max Meyer. Interesting stuff.
  21. I hear he’s gained 20 lbs of muscle to fill out his frame last summer. Just like Carlos Danger I heard good things about him. He’s a bit intense and passionate about the game, he does reminds me of Jarred Kelenic at draft time + extra 4-5 inches of height. But I hear despite his advanced plate discipline, Veen does have a bit of swing and miss to his game. The power is developing but it’s a future 70 raw power. BA’s Carlos Collazo mentioned, scouts are saying “Yelich body with a Bellinger swing” and Veen is a really driven guy. His bat could carry him up the minors fairly quickly.
  22. I’ve been on team Zac Veen for more than a month. But I won’t be upset if we end up with Gonzales, Meyers, or Hancock. If Austin Martin falls to us that would be perfect too.
  23. Hancock missed time last season from a lat injury, but he came back near the end. His injury was @ April-May 2019, and he only missed like 2-3 starts. The medicals shouldn’t be too out of the ordinary.
