I'm not trying to say Smoak is good.. I think they need an upgrade in LF to play Pearce at 1B. Just that Upton is complete dog s***. Sure he had a 101 wRC+ in 2015 but it was in 144PA and he had a 5.6% BB rate 27.8% K rate and .353 BABIP which is obviously unsustainable.
The other 3 years he was crap over a sample of 300PA or more so that is why you use the combined stats over those years instead of just looking at yearly splits. I would sit Smoak vs pitchers with good breaking balls as its clear he struggles with them but he's a pretty good option vs more of a fastball-changeup pitcher. He at least has a good batted ball profile which is probably why the Jays FO likes him.
I wouldn't. Upton has a 74 wRC+ over the last 4 years which makes him complete garbage. Smoak has a 111 wRC+ over that same time period. Unless Upton was a Pillar like defender in LF that is not worth the loss in offence.
Looking through the other teams projections and seems a lot of teams even the ones behind Toronto have relievers projected to be better than that 2-6 group. Seems like those guys are more of a dime/dozen.
I like Grilli quite a bit but he's getting to be pretty damn old.
Think the rotation should be a little higher but the depth is pretty bad. Liriano's projection in particular seems pretty low. When you compare the bullpen to other teams especially contenders it looks pretty bad. Osuna is really their only great reliever and his velo is down this spring with back issues.
I guess Morales has been crap at 1st base in workouts because they say he would get a string of playing time there to see what he can do but literally hasn't played the field once unless I'm missing something?
Even if he did hire a swing coach and changed his swing he still probably won't succeed. Pillar and Goins worked with Bobby Tewksbary last offseason and they didn't get any better.
Anyways it should be the organizations themselves that hire better f***ing coaches. Why should a player have to go out and hire his own swing coach while the org. employs coaches teaching the wrong technique?
Edit: Even Lawrie last year turned 10% of his contact from groundballs to flyballs and still wasn't good.
Velo is down and he's walked more than he's struck out. I'd say thats a little concerning especially when you hear that he doesn't have the same life on his sinker.
I doubt Shapiro is involved with the signing of players. Even Atkins probably doesn't do much, maybe a couple trips for some of the bigger names but they basically set the foundation and framework while the scouts are the guys signing these players.
Id be fine with Martin hitting leadoff but don't want him hitting second. Donaldson should be hitting 2nd with Morales/Bautista/Pearce/Tulo behind them.
Sounds like the Jays had a nice signing class. Basically get all these guys to sign and get them into a workout program with the Sports Science team and watch them develop. For a lot of these guys they haven't been trained that well so they can take off when they have proper instruction.
