Wow. Wizards offered $30 Million to try to lure Durant to Washington, I mean Scott Brooks to coach the team.
He's pretty average as far as HC go.
Yeah I'd do the same. What I'm trying to say is Montero shouldn't be on the roster based on what he's done to this point. There's a good reason for Cola not being on the roster but if you are going to replace him you might as well replace him with someone who can provide value in the field.
A left hitting platoon DH in this lineup just seems like a waste.
I don't see it worth sending Cola down to bring him up to be the Lefty hitting platoon DH. Cola is (was?) pretty good vs Lefties too so its not like there is some massive upgrade. Add in the fact you lose defensive value going from Cola to Edwin and it doesn't seem worth it. Not to mention Cola seems like a good clubhouse guy and Montero has had some makeup questions in the past.
If Cola is getting sent down I want someone who can provide value in the field.
I know projections are just projections but he hasn't shown he is any better than them so far this year. So why call him up if he isn't going to be an upgrade on the roster?
Montero is projected to be a league average hitter while having zero positional value as a DH only. Thats not even an asset.
His 5%BB rate and 23% K rate with a .154 ISO so far in AAA hasn't shown us anything different so far.
Cola is a much better hitter than Smoak vs Lefties. Even then I'd rather just have Edwin play 1st and use the DH to get Tulo, Bautista or JD a half day off. No reason Smoak should be playing vs LHP even if Cola isn't on the roster.
Would Bautista to LF and Saunders to 1B make more sense? Bautista still gets pretty good jumps on the ball and Saunders looks like he can barely move out there. I feel like Saunders would be a lot better at 1B too.
Thought I remember'd reading an article about it but I can't seem to find it. FWIW To the eye test it looked like Martin lost more than a few strikes low in the zone last year compared to when Thole catches him. (I know there can be a lot of error and confirmaiton bias with the *eye test*)
I meant catching not hitting. Thole was able to get a lot more strike calls than Martin with Dickey on the mound even though Martin is the better framer by all accounts.
How much does he lose catching the knuckler though? If the backup catcher is catching Dickey 3/4 of the time thats going to be a big part of his value. I don't like Thole as much as anyone but from the catchers we've seen catching Dickey he is by far the best one at it.
Thole isn't that bad of a framer when you consider the knuckleball penalty. I don't really see how Kratz makes this huge upgrade if he's here over Thole. They're both s***** hitters and are only going to play 40 games anyway. The difference probably isn't even half a win.
Christ...
Martin played 8 straight days coming into this game and the team doesn't have an off day anytime soon. You can't play your catcher that much and expect good performance. Especially now that the Jays have a high performance dept. they know how important rest and recovery is. As a catcher you can't just come cold off the bench thats not how it works unless you want him going on the DL pulling something.
