  1. I find it funny that someone with "Olerud" in their username is praising Gord Ash. That trade alone (Olerud and cash for Robert Person) destroyed any credibility Ash had, nevermind losing Alomar for nothing, signing Hanson, Williams/Hamilton, Loaiza/Young, etc. If the Rockies actually accepted the rumored 2000 trade (Astacio/Jimenez for Halladay/Wells/Carpenter), then Ash would have been by far the worst GM in sports history, or damn close to it.
  2. Why do people read Keith Law's columns for prospects? He talks out of his ass the majority of the time, describing a prospect's pitching motion in such specific ways that don't make a lick a sense ("he torqued his body in a way that caused sweat to drip down the right side of his brow, causing his arm to sway slightly to the left and his right buttock pointing awkwardly towards the opposing dugout.....I think that could potentially hurt him in the Majors"). Someone bring up his write-up on Zach Stewart many years ago. Yes, front of the rotation Zach Stewart, according to Mr. Law.
  3. Hutchison should be in AAA to regain his command after surgery and have his innings, pitch counts, and workload in general monitored. I can't see this season playing out as anything other than a firesale by mid-season. All the stories coming out and the lack of activity in the off-season seemed to plant the seeds.
  4. Replace Goins with Izturis and I'd be fine with that lineup against Moore.
  5. When in doubt, go for nostalgia. The organization's MO since Beeston reappeared. Doc is one of my favorite players ever, so I'll be glad to see him.
  6. Does every pitcher Pete Walker come in contact with stop throwing strikes and give up taters like it's 1998? It seems that way.
  7. Is Goins starting against LHP? If so, we're possibly looking at a bottom of the lineup with Thole and Goins against David Price. Depending on who platoons with Lind, you can add Navarro or Sierra at DH as well (although that shouldn't be nearly as bad as Thole and Goins against a lefty).
  8. I wonder if the Jays will DH Navarro tomorrow with Price on the mound now that they have another catcher to back-up Thole. Navarro can hit lefties, while Sierra does not have a favorable platoon split on either side (at least consistently).
  9. A better defensive JPA is a pretty good description of Gomes, IMO. Well, the 2011-12 JPA, at least. I don't think he will ever hit for a high average in the Majors given his BB and K rates (unless it is luck based like last season), but he is a good defender and has some pop. He will have value. It's a shame the Jays threw him into the Rogers deal. After JPA tanked in 2013, Gomes would have been very valuable for the Jays right now.
  10. A's expected to put Michael Taylor (remember him?) on waivers.
  11. Why is Dickey starting against the Yankees when he faces them next week?
  12. I'm not a Happ fan by any stretch, but the more SP options on the team, the better. Now we have a starting 5, plus Redmond, Rogers, and Happ still in the organization, plus guys like Stroman, Nolin, Jenkins, etc, in the minors. There is a reasonable amount of depth in there to avoid a 2013 redux, at least.
  13. Dickey, Hutchison, Buehrle, Morrow, and McGowan is probably the highest upside rotation out of all the internal options. It is not without massive risk (mostly injury), but at this point, I'd rather take a risk with a high ceiling than settle with Happ, Rogers, Redmond, etc. Those latter three will probably end up starting games for the Jays anyway at some point, but at least they are willing to try McGowan first.
  14. McGowan's first two innings of work in his AAA game: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K, 3 ground outs. Hitting 94-96 on the gun. We deserve to have some good luck for once. Let Dustin start and stay healthy! Even if it means releasing Happ and eating his salary.
  15. If Texas took Izturis, Thole, and Happ, I wouldn't even ask for any players in return. Addition by subtraction.
  16. @jonmorosi: Rangers have had trade talks due to injuries, looking to add depth at 2B and catcher. Izturis can play 2B (well, in theory at least). Make it happen.
  17. It's not the pitchers drafted that's the problem, it is the hitters. The jays haven't developed a hitting prospect in many years, and drafting athletes who can't hit certainly won't help that problem.
  18. Yep. Escobar likely brings more value over the life of his contract than Reyes will, and that's not even factoring the cost difference (Reyes will make more in 2014 alone than Escobar will from 2013-15 combined). If that trade never happened, then the follow up Dickey trade never happens, and the Jays are likely poised to make a run this season just with the saved money and prospect capital.
  19. My thoughts exactly. I don't want Sanchez or Stroman anywhere near Walker for any extended period of time.
  20. Every starter has regressed with Pete Walker. Every damn one. When Arnsberg was here, starters had career years or sustained success. Now we are seeing the opposite.
  21. When Romero was good, his BB/9 was 4.0, 3.5, and 3.2 respectively (2009-11). Even if he becomes a solid MLB starter again, he'll probably still have trouble with walks. That's who he is. I'm rooting for him. I'm not expecting much, but crazier things have happened.
  22. Two singles and a walk allowed by Romero in his 2nd inning of work. The Jays really need to start giving him more Spring Training innings. It's great that they are giving Stroman four innings to see if he can win a spot, but Romero makes $7.5M this year and the team needs to get him right again. Let him throe 3-4 innings today and see what he has. He'll have bad innings and good innings, but the stuff and command is more important.
  23. With Cabrera an impending free agent, and the 2015 payroll looking gigantic even without a LF and CF, I think keeping Sierra is probably wise. If he turns into something useful, great. If not, that's fine too. But I wouldn't drop him for nothing. Not a team that lacks cheap controllable assets like the Jays.
  24. Yeah the Jays gave up actual trade assets to get Josh Johnson and never bothered to qualify him. Santana not wanting to be given a qualifying offer doesn't seem like that big of a deal if you think he can help the 2014 team.
