  1. They should be able to get a huge haul for Bautista and Edwin, right? I mean, would the Red Sox give up Betts, Henry, and Swihart for one of them? Would the Cardinals give up Taveras and Martinez for one of them? How about Syndergaard and others? If so, do it. It beats hoping a .500 team can overachieve.
  2. Gibbons also got into two fights that year, with Hillenbrand and Lilly. That team should have made the playoffs, or at least been a lot closer. Then they were barely over .500 in 2007 and did not go on a run in 2008 until Cito took over. Same s*** here. Rogers finally decides to spend, Gibby is manager, and they'll probably finish below .500 both years (looking like a free fall is imminent). For all the talk of Gibbons making the right baseball moves, his teams never overachieve (like Showalter's teams, for example). At some point, you have to start questioning something he is doing. These guys aren't robots.
  3. The last two times the Jays dramatically increased payroll, it resulted in underachievement. Both times, they were managed by John Gibbons. Just saying.
  4. The Royals traded their top prospect(s) for a legit innings eating ace and a bullpen ace. The Jays traded their top prospect(s) for a middling knuckleballer coming off a career year, a declining SS with a terrible contract, a league average innings eater with a bad contract, and a starter who had a bum shoulder a year before the trade even happened. The Royals, even if they miss the playoffs, have to feel a lot better about their short-term move than the Jays. At least they got great value out of it.
  5. Happ getting destroyed, Hutchison's arm being ripped apart by career high in innings coming off TJS, Dickey being inconsistent, and Buehrle regressing. This will not be a fun last month and a half.
  6. He is on a great contract, but if the team doesn't look like a contender with him and Bautista, wouldn't it make sense to cash in on his great contract for players that could help in the future? The Jays are in a very familiar spot post-1993, and that's on a treadmill. They need to either trade prospects for vets in order to win (as they won't sign anyone) or scale back. Anything in between (i.e. this past off-season) will only result in an 80-85 win season and no playoff appearance.
  7. I think I would trade Hutchison in the off-season if he fetches something good. Gibbons has destroyed him with this season's high workload coming off Tommy John. If you could combine him and Sanchez to get an ace (Hamels?), do it.
  8. Trade Buehrle to the Dodgers for Guerrero and League. Put Guerrero at 2B and League becomes our 7th/8th inning guy. Platoon Gose and Pillar in CF. Trade Navarro and go cheap at catcher (Rene Rivera from the Pads, for example). Sign Melky only if he takes a three year deal. Sign Brandon McCarthy. Trade Happ.
  9. I can't wait until the team starts over after the season. As much as I hate the idea of trading Bautista and Edwin while they are so affordable, management messed up big time with this roster. We are an 85 win team and it's not 85 with a bullet. Trade with the Cards to get Taveras, or even the Dead Sox to get Owens, Betts, etc. Start from scratch. This core is done.
  10. No more platoon players! Re-sign Melky, start Reimold at DH (he hits both sides equally well), and trade Lind for either an infielder or reliever. If you have to platoon anyone, have it be Gose and Pillar at center. That's it. I'm tired of teams bringing lefties in and the Jays hitters turning into mush.
  11. John Olerud and cash for Robert Person. Letting Roberto Alomar go for nothing. Trading David Cone and Roger Clemens to the Yankees to help their dynasty. Nevermind Blue Jays history, I'd like anyone to name five GM's in the last 20 years for anyone team who was worse than him.
  12. Gibbons is seriously turning to s*** lately. Navarro batting 4th, Gose playing over Reimold, using Sanchez every other day, Valencia playing at all against RHP, etc. He is trying with this depleted roster but he is making some questionable decisions.
  13. Any word on Edwin? I think we can survive without Lind, but Edwin is necessary.
  14. Of course it will be Kawasaki.
  15. Yeah, the only way the Jays have a chance against the O's is if they win 6 or 7 of their remaining head-to-head games. Unfortunately, the WC is very lumped together.
  16. I find it very hard to believe that "God" would be a Jays fan given what has happened to this franchise the last two decades.
  17. Never underestimate the power of MLB when it comes to helping the Yankees. Jeter's final season would make a great playoff story, in terms of ratings and fan interest. Be very afraid of the Yankees.
  18. Good lord, just blow it up already if you're not going to spend any further! Bautista for Oscar Tavaras/Carlos Martinez, Edwin for something (from the Indians maybe?), etc, etc. All of this window dressing just to distract from the inevitable (Alex's firing) is a huge time waster.
  19. Agreed. I don't necessarily think Gibbons is the problem, but it is disappointing to me that the last two times the Jays went for it (2006-08, 2013) it was with Gibbons as manager and both times the team underachieved. Cito Gaston got a team with Roy Halladay and a bunch of below replacement level scrubs to win more games in a tough division in 2009 than the 2013 and probably 2014 teams will win in a much more balance division (at least this year). At some point you stop admiring his use of platoons and start wondering why all of his teams don't live up to expectations. It's certainly not all of his fault, and in this year's case it's entirely on Alex (or Rogers) for not adding to the team, but I'm sick of having a good manager that doesn't win, while a guy who sleeps in the dugout like Cito can get 85 wins out of a team that wanted to rebuild. I know I'm going to get heat for this, as "manager doesn't matter" and all that jazz, but whatever. Fire Alex, Beeston, and Gibbons. Don't rebuild, just retool and get a manager with some form of track record to come in (like Cleveland did with Francona).
  20. The Yankees next 10 games are against the s***** Rangers SEVEN! times and the Jays three times. They could go on a mini run as well. If the Jays offense gets healthy and Reimold is their 4th OF, I could live with that. But they need to get health damn quick and keep their heads above water until then.
  21. After going 11-24 in a 35 game stretch, the Jays created this urgency. If they even went 15-20 in that stretch, they would have been 1st in the East right now. Unfortunately every series becomes vital because of that, and the margin of error becomes non-existant.
  22. The 2nd wild card is too crowded with similar teams. I think the East is far more attainable since there are so many head to head games where with some luck (and we will need it) the Jays can control their own fate. But yes, the Mariners are flawed, and the Yankees are flawed and hurt. If Tampa and Boston can stay below .500, then the main challenge for that 2nd WC is Cleveland. It's up for grabs. However, I still think the East is far more attainable.
  23. Man, does Navarro have to bat behind Bautista? If JPA wasn't so bad last year, Dinner would be getting far more flack for being a bad baseball player. Against RHP with this lineup, put Rasmus behind Bautista. At least there is a chance Colby can belt one out.
  24. I don't know, I think Guerrero may be able to hit in the Majors. As well as Reyes depends on which Reyes were talking about. Reyes in his prime? Absolutely not. Reyes from 2014-18? That's far more realistic. EIther way, just trying to think of ideas to get rid of Reyes while getting some middle infield talent back. I think Reyes is well on his way to becoming Vernon Wells for us, if he isn't already. The sooner they dump him, the better.
  25. Trade Reyes somewhere (Tigers?) and trade for Alexander Guerrero from the Dodgers. Put Guerrero at 2B and Kawasaki at short (platoon him with Tolleson). Saves money and maybe adds some upside if Guerrero's bat can play in the Majors.
