One thing the Rays don't have is money, due to below-expected attendance. And no guarantee Longoria and Loney stay on the team past the deadline, as they could be dumped to bigger market teams in order for the Rays to try to get payroll down to a point they can actually break even with current attendance. They can't afford their current payroll, even with revenue sharing and TV money, when they're drawing Expos-level attendance. And I know they're slumping.. but this is a AAA lineup offensively at best.
And yes, the Red Sox aren't out of it.. but they've dug a deep hole, and cannot continue to give starts to Rick Porcello or Justin Masterson. Plus, any chance of contention for the Red Sox will depend what happens in coming weeks, and their July sked is very tough (Astros twice, Yankees, Angels, Tigers, White Sox). If the rest of the AL East get hot, or someone else does (Oakland? Cleveland? Minnesota? L.A.?), Boston won't have a chance.
