  1. Getting that 2nd year for Melky's contract. Actually that worked out for both sides. Jays actually get something out of the deal, since the 1st year was crap due to tumor. Melky, had he signed a 1-year deal, wouldve been a free agent after spine surgery to remove a tumor. That doesnt exactly scream multi-year contract...and he probably wouldve ended up on a 1-year deal making less than the $8M now.
  2. Friedman "So Alex, lets revisit that Edwin for Price Deal" AA "How about we throw in Sanchez. He'll have to be paid in 6-7 years, and with the Romero extension we're contemplating, and the cost overruns with putting grass into the Rogers Centre, we wont be able to afford him" Friedman "You know you have a point, we can take Norris and Stroman off your hands too." AA "Done. Wanna get some Souvlaki?"
  3. Mine was when I realized that Brett Lawrie was the brother Wayne in The Wonder Years http://geektyrant.com/news/the-wonder-years-reunion-selfie-and-photo-for-dvd-release
  4. Don't get me wrong, I was not commenting either way on whether Seitzer has had an impact in that post. I was just pointing out how the topic is treated by the media, Sportsnet guys especially. I actually do think Seitzer has had an impact, and it is rather noticeable. Youre correct that it is a balance, in that the players have to buy-in, and carry out the approach with success, which fortunately they have been.
  5. Call me cynical, but I really think this grass field at Rogers Centre is a ruse. Beeston, as usual, is talking out of his ass, and changing his story every time he speaks. First it was 2015. Then it was not 2015 because of the Argos. Then the BMO possibility came up, and it was 2018 because they need drainage. Now it will be well the Argos need a place to play. Either Beeston is being lied to, or he's just lying to placate the fan base, but I don't think Rogers is going to 1) give up Argos lease money if they can keep them playing there 2) give up ancillary revenue from other shows, events, concerts, etc. 3) spend money on top of all of that to dig up the cement floor to add in drainage and lay new grass and 4) give up the excuse that X Player (call him Carlos Beltran) wouldnt sign here despite us having the highest offer because he doesnt want to play on astroturf.
  6. I love North Korean State Run Media (Rogers) when the team is struggling with hitting or pitching. Fans will suggest that they fire the hitting or pitching coach, and the talking heads will swear on God, Children, Wife, and Country that its the players who need to perform, and it has nothing to do with the hitting or pitching coach. Then when the team is hitting or pitching well, all you hear is how great Seitzer is. Approach this, approach that, he's taught them this, he's taught them that... fing annoying. Long Live Supreme Commander Kim Jong Un.
  7. I had to look this up, as I didnt really believe it as well. He's had a minimum of 30 starts in EVERY season since 2001. (remember, he is the Anti-BrandonMorrow)
  8. http://www.gammonsdaily.com/anti-analytic-buehrle-leading-explosive-blue-jays-atop-al-east/ Takeaways - If Jays were to fall out of it, AA would not trade Buehrle and keep him as a $19M teacher; Jays are at max payroll; and they would consider (prefer?) rental pitchers.
  9. Part of post-draft orientation for these pitchers should be to have Tommy John surgery, preemptively. Its getting that ridiculous now.
  10. With Rasmus and perhaps Melky gone next year, I think Gose is pretty much untouchable at this point. Pillar would be hard to give up as well. Im resigned to the notion that either Stroman or Sanchez will have to go, if we want to upgrade our staff for this year. I think its fine, as long as we're getting someone who will be here beyond a year or two. I agree Niese would fit perfectly. 7 Years of controllability of Stroman or Sanchez for 4.5 years of controllability of Niese, with the difference in salaries offsetting the risk that Stroman or Sanchez are a bust. Sabr peeps say this isnt a thing, but I still worry about NL pitchers coming over to the AL, esp the AL East (albeit this being a down year). SSS but Niese's interleague splits have been pretty bad from my cursory look.
  11. Yeah, how long is the waiver period? I was under the impression that it was 48 hours?
  12. Roof is open. Whats the ETA on revival of the Dickey Excuse Thread? T-5hrs?
  13. If the Jays trade for a starter, and give up 2 or more of their top prospects (Stro/Sanchez/Norris/Tirado/Nay...) I'd like to see them go back to the mentality of acquiring young major league, yet controllable guys, not 30ish, verge of free agency or rental types. If you go back and listen to AA interviews, and Rogers talking heads pre Nov 2012, that was the script before The Trade and The Dickey Deal. We had stockpiled all these prospects, and if we traded them, it would be for guys who were young stars, yet still in their early arb years, so even if we werent in WIN NOW Mode, these guys would be in their primes when we were. The perfect guy for that script wouldve been Latos, when SD was shopping him after 2011. Legend has it that AA wouldnt include Syndergaard OR D'Arnaud, so the deal didnt get done. Then 1 year later, he includes Syndergaard AND D'Arnaud for Dickey. Totally flipped the script. I'd prefer we target guys like Dallas Keuchel, Tyson Ross, Tom Koehler, Johnathan Niese, etc. who are under control for at least 2-3 more years after this one, are either very cheap, or relatively cheap (Niese has an extension, but still tops out at like 9 mil in 2016). Sure guys like this will be hard to acquire, as they are young and controllable, and fit with a rebuilding team mentality...but Samardjiza will also be hard to acquire. When we're talking high end prospects, I'd like to get a guy who can be controllable for the next few seasons, not just the rest of this year and next.
  14. Do you know how much it costs to put up a Rogers Communications Advertisement or Banner or secure naming rights?? This is free advertising for the company. This is coming from Guy Laurence himself.
  15. By next year, he'll be out of baseball, living off his wifes money, so he'll have ample time for charity work.
  16. This will probably get merged with the other JPA sent down thread, but By God, JPA saying that something is his fault, has to be thread worthy. I'll stand by that statement till I die. http://rangersblog.dallasnews.com/2014/05/j-p-arencibia-on-demotion-to-triple-a-round-rock-its-my-fault.html/ ARLINGTON - Signed as a potential starter, Texas Rangers C J.P. Arencibia has now lost two jobs in two months. He couldn’t nail down the starting job after Geovany Soto suffered a spring training knee injury and on Tuesday he was informed he couldn’t hold the backup’s job either. He was demoted to Triple-A Round Rock and replaced by C Chris Gimenez. Robinson Chirinos will remain the regular catcher for the foreseeable future. “I’m not excited about it, but what can I say: It’s my fault,” Arencibia said. “I’ve got to play to form. … It’s not something that they did. I have to make an adjustment or whatever it is and (play to) my abilities. It’s about going down there and getting consistent at bats, playing hard and then I’ll come back here.” Arencibia was hitting .133 with a .182 OBP in 60 at-bats. Among the 168 AL players with at least 50 at-bats, Arencibia’s .415 OPS was the fourth-lowest. Two of three players below him – Minnesota’s Pedro Florimon and Oakland’s Daric Barton – have already been sent to the minors., Behind the plate, Arencibia seemed to help Yu Darvish thrive, but struggled with any other pitcher. Darvish had a 1.18 ERA with Arencibia behind the plate, but all other pitchers had a 6.70 ERA with him. In addition, Arencibia caught only two of 11 attempted basestealers. Robinson Chirinos has taken over the “The two spots we’ve struggled at most offensively are catcher and second base,” Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said. “We made a move at second base about a week or two ago, and we’re doing the same thing at the catching spot.” “I do think being able to play see some pitches just to get the bat going,” Arencibia said. “It’s tough because it’s one of those things in talking to [hitting instructor Dave] Magadan, he told me I had the highest percentage of hard-hit balls. It’s a matter of, just hoping they fall. That’s all you can do. There’s got to be a consistency in your approach. I don’t know, just getting down there and working and trying to stay on the path that I’ve been. Unfortunately the results haven’t been there but the contact, the hard-hit balls, that has been there.” Arencibia has not been in the minors since 2010. While there he learned a lesson that may help him in his current situation. “Fortunately for me I got to see Edwin Encarnacion when he got designated and everyone passed on him,” Arencibia said. “:He came back to Triple-A when I was in Triple-A in 2010. I saw him go down there, work hard, get back, and then he’s where he’s at today. I’m not the first person it’s happened to. It’s all about how you take it.”
  17. Gose, is the assumed CF starter. He's still here. Unless AA has made another move from the time i started writing this post till now.
  18. 9 Man Bullpen, here we come.
  19. Still probably wont sign. AA's non realistic value assessments.
  20. Can Dickey teach Rickey and Drabek the knuckleball?
  21. There has to be a trade soon. They cant keep going on like this. All of the moves that people are complaining about are because the starters cant go more than 4-5 innings a start. Even when they pitch well, they have high pitch counts and have to be taken out. Even if Stroman can replace Dustin, then we're left praying that Redmond of all people can be serviceable enough to replace Happ once he falters, which he will. All the "depth" AA talked about...not wanting to shell out money for "fringe" guys, because of the depth we had at the AAA level, where is that now? Its hope upon hope at this point.
