  1. I can't help but notice how the payroll keeps conveniently sliding lower and lower, while also keeping in mind how adamant Alex/Beeston were in saying that the payroll was almost sure to rise. There's now a pretty sizeable chunk of space between where the payroll will be, versus where it was projected to be. ....could there really be a big starter acquisition on the horizon? Scares me to think about it, and I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. If they really did go after one of the big-three, I almost have to assume they'd be most interested in Shields (AA has complimented him heavily in the past, he's got an AL East pedigree, and there's no way he's making more than five years). I'm not sure if I'm all that comfortable with them giving Shields what he'll command at this point.
  2. I think one thing that isn't being appreciated enough is how much money that the Saunders acquisition really saves. Not only will he be making less than half of what Happ would have (net savings of around 3M), this trade almost definitely puts a close to the Melky chapter, who will probably get more than 40M now after today's Markakis atrocity. Not to mention the draft pick they'll now obtain when the Maker of Melk signs elsewhere.

  4. Brandon Moss -sobbing hysterically-
  5. Twitter reactions (because there's so many good ones):
  6. I'd absolutely love it, but I really don't see them getting Souza for the kind of hideous pittance offers that people have suggested so far. Like I mean Goins and Lugo? C'mon, lol.
  7. According to Rosenthal, the Jays were telling teams that they couldn't take on any payroll or move any prospects this past season at the trade deadline, so maybe he was just completely hamstrung.
  8. As much as I defend AA though, I still think the Gomes for Rogers trade was the worst move of that year, and that was all on AA. He's done those kind of moves in the past (Snider for Lyon, Thames for Delabar, 1 roster for Happ, Napoli for Francisco, more than $1 for Cordero), and that's one thing I've always had against him. He seems to lose all his IQ when it comes to acquiring relievers, which is why what worries me is that relief is the biggest item left on his shopping list this season. What he does with the bullpen will tell us a lot about how far he's come, or whether or not he still values them way higher than he should.
  9. Along with the marketing. A victim of sexual abuse that had a rocky road throughout the entirety of his major league career, who suddenly discovered a prodigious pitch, won a Cy Young, and wrote a book? It had headlines written all over it, and that's exactly what they did after the trade.
  10. I agree with you that it's rare, but in scenarios that involve very high-ticket type players, it does sometimes play a factor. Fielder is the absolute epitome of a owner stepping in and pointing out exactly what he wants. Anyone can look back at his signing, and you'll remember clearly that the Tigers came out of the blue, and it was soon discovered that it was because Illitch wanted to make it happen. Just the way it was marketed, and the way Beeston spoke about it (especially his quotes in Davidi's book), it seemed like there was a higher involvement in the move. I'm not saying AA is completely innocent for those moves, because that's the same offseason where he made that atrocious Gomes for Rogers move, but I don't pin it completely on him either. Regardless, all of this stuff is in the past, and he's on absolute fire right now, so what's done is done and we should all revel and enjoy what's going on now.
  11. My assumption is that they played a hand in the 2012 moves (and the subsequent "parameters" that were placed after the fact) not the ones happening now. Beeston raving about his "track team" with his big pedo smile after picking up Reyes, Boni, JJ and Buehrle just screamed "marketing move".
  12. Braves spend 44M+ on Markakis for four years, Jays pick up a better player for a 4M payroll savings. Now bring back Dirks on the cheap, and you no longer have to fear the inevitable Saunders injury, since Dirks/Pillar should be a very respectable fallback while he's out.
  13. Projected for 2.9M.
  14. This offseason is full of moves that make so much f***ing sense, that you would think there's no chance they'd happen. The only move of that type I remember in recent memory is the Melky signing, where I was begging for it to happen, and had absolutely no confidence that it would. Now all this move is going to be make me do is cling more desperately to the hope that they pick up Crain for the bullpen.
  15. Beeston rarely lies about payroll.
  16. My reasoning is that he was being told what to do by Beeston/Rogers, and I'm sticking to it.
  17. YES!!! I f***ing LOVE this offseason.
  18. He's weighing his options and giving serious consideration to a return to Japan.
  19. Yeah this is the first time it's ever felt like AA has been free to do whatever he wants.
  20. Speaking of 2B, why has Rickie Weeks gotten essentially 0 mention or speculation so far? I feel like he could be a great fallback option to consider. Fangraphs crowd projected him for a 2/12 deal and he seems to have rebounded pretty well with the bat this past season. His defense is still pretty bad and he's always K'd a lot, but hell, at that price tag, if you can throw down a 120 wRC+, I'll take it. Edit: Though he's right-handed; I don't think that should be a deterrent, but I get that the Jays FO is looking for lefties.
  21. I kept thinking to myself that this might be in the cards; that they had determined with the player(s) ahead of time that they'd be able to re-sign them to a smaller dear shortly after non-tendering them, but then what confuses me is why didn't they simply do one of those "Jays avoid arbitration with Smoak" deals instead? I guess they were still negotiating? I guess that's neither here nor there at this point, good depth signing. Hoping they still find someone else to slot ahead of him, but if they can work something out in LF/2B, then it's not the worst thing in the world.
