The Yankees ruined Sonny Gray so it's entirely possible they wanted Happ to pitch a certain way as well which wasn't suited to his style in Toronto.

Sounds great, and then when Ohtani goes 5-6 innings the Angels will have a black hole in their lineup that could have been filled by a competent major league hitter. Although I'm not entirely sure how pinch hitters work with the new 3 batter minimum rule. Sounds like too much of an NL strategy because then you're blowing up your bench.

He didn't have a ST and only started pitching against professionals again in June. I think he did pretty well considering the circumstances. ERA has him as 2.3 RA-9 WAR in 112 innings and a 4.06 xFIP paints a much cleaner picture of his previous season. Even with a juiced ball I don't think he's likely to stick around a 24% HR/FB rate. His velocity has stayed incredibly consistent, his PD stats were pretty much inline with career numbers, and we have some of the best defensive catchers in the league already with Jansen, McGuire and Maile so I don't see why him being reliant on elite control and framing would be an issue here. He still projects for 2.7 WAR next season and that's after a year which could only be described as a nightmare from start to finish on his end.

Well we're heavily using hindsight here to say this. At the beginning of FA no one knew what the market would be like, and if it followed the last couple of offseasons the Odorizzi probably would have ended up with like a 2/25 deal at best and he'd look like an idiot for rejecting the QO, in fact he was still probably smart to have taken it to guarantee himself a solid one year payout. If the Jays, like I'm sure many teams did, approached FA with the assumption that prices would have been low then convincing Odorizzi to opt out for this 4/60+ and the market stayed quiet (aside from the stars) then they would look like idiots. I don't think this is one case where you could have done anything about it, the player had a tight deadline and him accepting the QO must have meant either teams weren't really allowed to talk to him or he was being lowballed from the beginning.

If you think about it from a fan perspective as well, which I'm sure plays some small part, Strasburg has been the chosen one in DC from the moment he was drafted. With him just winning WS MVP and now the chance to retire with the team he's going to end up as the greatest National of all time which is pretty neat. It's an easy sell for those that might think that's a lot of money for a guy with his extensive injury history, ideally he can avoid sustained injuries in his 30s (unlikely) and have a chance to end up in the HoF. I would bet they'll regret those last few seasons from a financial standpoint but with him being a team legend and all that it's more palatable.

The Knicks' biggest problem starts at the very top, I don't think he would be interested in being in such a dysfunctional organization.

Teoscar can't be worth anything and the Cubs wouldn't just give Schwarber away in a salary dump after he's had two straight ~3 win seasons and they have control of him for two more years. Their OF is already quite awful so I can't seem them moving their best piece there unless we were giving up some very good prospects.

I think you are being a bit greedy. You don't need stars everywhere, you need some stars and ideally no black holes on the roster. Thames with a platoon partner can probably provide something like 2 WAR, the WS champions got mostly nothing from their collective first basemen except for Howie Kendrick who only played around 50 games there since he was a utility player. 2 WAR at first base would already be a pretty big improvement from what we got out of the position last season, and with 1B being so cheap to acquire these days it's totally fine if we fill that up with stopgap players.

I don't think that's "taking a gamble" kind of money, that would be at most around the 4/80 or 5/100 level. IMO what Wheeler got is proven elite level contributor money, and I don't think that's what he is. While I would have welcomed the team signing him, maybe even at the aforementioned "gamble money", I would be uncomfortable with us giving him what the Phils ultimately offered.

To say that Lowry is the Raptors' version of Joe Carter is a serious slight to him. Lowry is still an excellent player, he was playing really well before injured and he'll likely get back to a similar level as before. He was still making Lowry like plays in every respect except his shooting, including drawing key fouls when no one else could buy a basket. He'll get back into rhythm and the shots will start falling again, like you I have no issue with Nurse continuing to play him yesterday despite his horrible shooting woes. He's probably still our second best player, and we need Lowry to get back to his usual level if we're to continue making noise this season.

Damn I didn't know Ryu was a Boras client too. He really does control the free agent market. Guy has the top 3 names in Rendon, Cole and Strasburg, and also represents Moustakas who got a great deal, Ryu, Keuchel, and Castellanos. That's insane.

That really sucks for the White Sox. They just acquired the top FA catcher who is an elite framer and adding Wheeler would have been a huge boost to their team even at that price.

This makes the Corbin contract look like a steal, he was a guy coming off a nearly 6 win season when he entered free agency.

Jesus that's like 5/125-130 with the pick attached. That is a LOT of money for someone who may or may not be actually elite.

Zack Wheeler went from "not sure if it's worth it to sign him at 4/72 + losing a second round pick" to 5 years over $100M plus the pick attached. His agent did very well for him and this offseason has been crazy, a far cry from the last couple.

AJ Burnett from 2006-2007 pitched 301 innings with a 3.85 ERA (85 ERA-), 4.09 FIP (91 FIP-), 5.2 fWAR, 6.3 RA9-WAR. If literally anyone in our rotation had done that for a single season, or was projected to do that next season they would be by far our best starter.
