What? Who is blaming Shapiro for anything. But actually yes, if Shapiro can't keep this team at the top of the AL then he should be blamed. Of course though (reasonable) people won't blame him if he doesn't lock up Bautista. We have a whole bunch of talent throughout the roster, even once Bautista leaves.
AA was one of the most creative GMs in the game. He did exactly what he said he would do when here: build up the farm, use those pieces on the team AND to acquire good talent. He always said he believed in acquiring elite talent and that's what he tried to do. He emptied the farm system in a few moves that didn't work out, but showed complete ability in building it back up again. It was actually pretty amazing, like Connor Greene for example. Nobody was talking about that guy, but then after AA traded all those guys at the desdline, he started going on interviews and talking about how they still have guys they like on the farm, and how Greene has really impressed them. Then all of a sudden people are all talking about Greene and he is a top 100 prospect.
I like Shapiro. I also really like AA. I believe over his tenure AA added more value through trades then he lost. I think he made some mistakes but also pulled off some absolute steals. Okay so Dickey didnt win the cy young, but Donaldson won the mvp.
I think it will be even more ridiculous if Shapiro tanks this team into a rebuild in a year and people like you say it had to be done because of what AA left him. AA did everything the fans and Rogers could have hoped by the time he was done.
On the topic at hand, personally if it was me, I'd be looking to sign EE right now and I'd be looking to trade Bautista for a good young pitcher and a lesser OFer. He is fun to watch and I have no problem with his demands for a certain salary, but if he looks at it in black and white, we should too. We could trade him and get some good pieces that could help for years. People will pretend in a year that Shapiro didn't at least have that option, and maybe he doesnt because of Rogers, but it should be done.
