To play devils advocate, Pillar has shown the contact skills to hit for a high enough average in the minors that he could keep his OBP somewhere between respectable to good. Last year was his first full year in the MLB, so some of us are being a bit hard on him. Logically, there is a chance he could hit around .290 and throw up an OBP near .340 which wouldn't be that bad.
It's just he does not pass the eye test because he'd take hacks for the fence all the time last year, especially late in games, when he should have been just trying to get on base. He doesn't pass the ear test either, seemingly having a milder version of JPA syndrome, where he seems to think he is the shiz already and doesn't really give the impression he understands that he is not the offensive hero of the team. Guy needs to seem more willing to learn and take on the role of getting on base.
