  1. Jeff Passan @JeffPassan Major League Baseball's newest TV partner: Apple. At the company's event today, it announced a deal with the league to carry a Friday Night Baseball doubleheader on Apple TV+ starting this season. Games will be exclusively broadcast on the streaming service.
  2. Jon Heyman @JonHeyman The sides today were still working off the 12-team postseason they temporarily agreed to in Jupiter. Players are open to the 14 preferred by MLB but they are apart on the format for 14 — the games, the ghost win, etc.
  3. Evan Drellich @EvanDrellich MLB’s Glen Caplin: “We were hoping to see some movement in our direction to give us additional flexibility & get a deal done quickly. The Players Association chose to come back to us w/a proposal that was worse than Monday night & was not designed to move the process forward” Evan Drellich @EvanDrellich MLB’s Glen Caplin cont’d: "On some issues, they even went backwards. Simply put, we are deadlocked. We will try to figure out how to respond, but nothing in this proposal makes it easy.” MLB suggested that the MLBPA had verbally offered something different on prearb pool.
  4. Jon Heyman @JonHeyman MLB doesn’t see much progress in union proposal today. Players did make some moves but made no change in CBT request of $238M to $263M over the 5 years. MLB offer goes from $220M to $230M over the 5. Still a ways to go.
  5. Evan Drellich @EvanDrellich NEW YORK — Major League Baseball’s negotiating team — Dan Halem, Pat Houlihan, Morgan Sword and Reed MacPhail — has arrived. The players today are expected to make a proposal to the league, formalizing previously discussed positions and introducing some new ones. Evan Drellich @EvanDrellich The meeting between MLB and the MLBPA has ended. Went a little more than an hour and a half. More TK. Evan Drellich @EvanDrellich MLBPA proposal per source: • Would grant MLB ability to implement 3 specific on-field changes w/45-day notice, starting w/2023 season: pitch clock, larger bases, shift restriction. MLB also wants robo umps w/45-day, players didn’t offer • Prearb pool starting at $80m, down $5m Evan Drellich @EvanDrellich More union proposal today: • No change on CBT or minimums. • If direct draft pick comp (qualifying offer) goes away, MLBPA now OK w/other CBT-related penalties (sometimes called non-monetary penalties) • Some revenue sharing changes still on table for PA Evan Drellich @EvanDrellich • MLBPA is still at 6 picks for amateur draft lottery, MLB Is at 5 (and there’s other disagreements) Dan Halem and Bruce Meyer had a one on one today after the group meeting. TBD when next meeting will be.
  6. Buster Olney @Buster_ESPN Hearing from sources on both sides of the CBA talks that they are hopeful that a renewed discussion of the 14-team playoff field could be a potential breakthrough -- for talks that need a breakthrough. Buster Olney @Buster_ESPN Keep in mind that the teams most invested in the expanded playoff field are small- and mid-market teams -- which are also the teams that prefer a more restrictive CBT. So there could be some badly needed room created for horse-trading in this overture.
  7. Evan Drellich @EvanDrellich Sources: Angels, Diamondbacks, Reds and Tigers owners opposed MLB luxury tax increase to $220 million. MLB also proposed including player meal money in calculation of luxury tax, which irked players. https://t.co/gBKrqAx9wV
  8. Marly Rivera @MarlyRiveraESPN In the meeting between MLB and the MLBPA reps, which lasted an hour and a half, the tone was “the same” and there was no progress and “no breakthroughs,” sources tell ESPN. No proposals were made. Marly Rivera @MarlyRiveraESPN There will be a player call this afternoon to determine the next steps.
  9. James Wagner @ByJamesWagner Two days after labor talks in Florida were called off, the lead negotiators for MLB and the players’ union will meet in person today.
  10. Ben Nicholson-Smith @bnicholsonsmith Players plan to decline MLB proposal, source tells me and @ShiDavidi, confirming @JonHeyman Ben Nicholson-Smith @bnicholsonsmith Source told me and @ShiDavidi "it's over." Players felt basically nothing about MLB's last and best offer was acceptable.
  11. Evan Drellich @EvanDrellich MLBPA today offered to drop its request on the new prearbitration bonus pool to $85 million in the first year, w/a $5m increase annually over course of deal, source said. Union previously was at $115m. MLB has offered $25m. Evan Drellich @EvanDrellich MLBPA’s most recent CBT proposal (MLB’s most recent in parenths for comparison): 2022: $238m (220) 2023: $244m (220) 2024: $250m (220) 2025: $256m (224) 2026: $263m (230) Evan Drellich @EvanDrellich On league minimum salary: MLBPA’s latest offer starts at $725,000, with increases of $20,000 in first few years of deal, a source said, then a different increase later. MLB has offered $675,000 with $10,000 increases (the offer made yesterday)
  12. Alex Wood @Awood45 FWIW MLB has pumped to the media last night & today that there’s momentum toward a deal. Now saying the players tone has changed. So if a deal isn’t done today it’s our fault. This isn’t a coincidence. We’ve had the same tone all along. We just want a fair deal/to play ball.
  13. Jon Heyman @JonHeyman MLB official said they thought they had a “path to a deal” last night when they extended the deal but that the union has struck a different note today. The official further stated thru league would make one final best offer and hope for the best. Things Obvs have turned south.
  14. jonah @yyzsportsmedia While it doesn't look like we will have real baseball games any time soon, more sources confirm the return of Buck, Tabby et all with no changes to @BlueJays TV broadcasts. Radio unclear
  15. Evan Drellich @EvanDrellich MLB today indicated a willingness to miss a month of games and took a more threatening tone than yesterday, sources briefed on the day’s first meeting between MLB and the Players Association tell me, @Ken_Rosenthal and @FabianArdaya. Full context of conversation not yet known.
  16. Jon Heyman @JonHeyman Contradictory to all the negativity/ upset surrounding the MLB/players talks, one person involved said he believes the sides are now “within striking distance” and a deal could be done be tomorrow night. Luxury tax remains the sticky issue but a 225/230M threshold should work.
  17. Evan Drellich @EvanDrellich Meeting breaking up. Among MLB proposals today: MLB raised its prearbitration bonus pool $5 million, to $20 million. Still a very large gap compared to players’ proposal. MLB also proposed to allow one more draft pick to be determined by lottery, now top 4. Players had proposed 8 Evan Drellich @EvanDrellich The sides plan to meet again tomorrow. On MLB’s prearbitration bonus pool: the $20 million would go to 30 players. Union’s latest proposal distributed it to 150 players (at $115 million) Evan Drellich @EvanDrellich Sources: Major League Baseball withdrew its proposal asking the union to allow MLB control/ability to reduce minor league roster sizes. MLB also withdrew its proposal limiting the number of times a player can be optioned to 5. (Right now, MLB doesn’t have a proposed limit.) Evan Drellich @EvanDrellich This does not mean MLB cannot or would not unilaterally attempt to reduce minor league roster sizes ever in future. (Remember, minor league players do not have a union of their own.)
  18. Players had proposed 8 Evan Drellich @EvanDrellich No revised CBT proposal today. That’s an area of major importance to both sides.
  19. Jesse Rogers @JesseRogersESPN MLB and the MLBPA have been inside Roger Dean Stadium for over three hours. Unclear how much time they’ve spent together or in different rooms but neither side has come out yet.
  20. Brennan Delaney @Brennan_L_D #BlueJays fans may have missed this, but CJ Van Eyk underwent Tommy John and will miss the 2022 season.
