  11. Jays signed another St. Paul Saint. Eric Veglahn, LHP St. Paul, Minn. — The contract of St. Paul Saints LHP Eric Veglahn has been purchased by the Toronto Blue Jays, the club announced on Monday. The 22-year-old Veglahn was 3-4 with a 4.39 ERA with one complete game in 10 games (nine starts). In 53.1 innings pitched he walked just 18, struck out 32 and opponents hit just .246 against him. He found out his contract was being purchased following his start on Sunday against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. Veglahn was pitching on three days rest for the first time in his career and was solid going 6.0 innings allowing four runs (one earned) on just three hits while walking two and striking out a career high six. He allowed just three hits in each of his last three starts. In nine starts this season Veglahn allowed three earned runs or less in six of the nine, allowed five or fewer hits in six of nine and went at least 6.0 innings in five of nine. He earned his first professional victory on July 7 at Fargo allowing one run on three hits in 7.2 innings. Veglahn becomes the second Saints player to have his contract purchased this season, joining pitcher John Straka who also had his contract purchased by the Blue Jays on August 12.

  17. http://www.tmz.com/2016/08/22/mlb-star-edwin-encarnacion-battery-std-allegations/ Toronto Blue Jays superstar Edwin Encarnacion has been sued by a woman who claims he knowingly gave her multiple STDs during a romantic weekend ... TMZ Sports has learned. The woman behind the lawsuit claims she's a 24-year-old family friend of the MLB star who first met him in 2013. In her lawsuit, the woman claims she hooked up with one of Edwin's teammates in 2015 -- but was tested in December 2015 at a Planned Parenthood and was told she was clean. The woman claims she later hooked up with Edwin during a trip to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic in February 2016 ... and had unprotected sex on at least 2 occasions. Problem is ... the woman claims she was in pain in the days after the hookup and thought she had Zika -- so she went to a doctor. She later learned it was NOT Zika -- but rather two STDs. The woman claims she contacted Edwin -- but he insisted he was clean and "suggested she may have picked up [the STDs] when they went 4-wheeling and she swam in the river." The woman says Edwin later backed off his claims about being STD-free -- and then stopped contacting her altogether. The woman claims she now believes he knew he was carrying STDs all along. The woman is suing Edwin for battery, misrepresentation of the facts and more -- and is demanding more than $11.5 MILLION to make things right. We reached out to Edwin's agent -- who told us "no comment."

The Buffalo Bisons built and early two-run lead but couldn't keep up to the offensive outburst by the Charlotte Knights, as the hometown team took the rain-drenched Sunday evening affair at BB&T Ballpark with an 8-5 win. The Herd wasted little time getting on the scoreboard while the field was dry. Dalton Pompey took the fourth pitch of the game and hammered it onto the concourse in right for his fourth home run of the campaign Next up was Darrell Ceciliani and he drove a ball even further than Pompey's, but to the deepest part of the field, slamming it off the wall in center. Ceciliani then moved up 90 feet as Matt Dominguez ripped a single off of the glove of shortstop Eddy Alvarez. Chris Colabello made it four hits in four at-bats for Buffalo, as he cashed in Ceciliani with liner to center field. The Knights seemed to not have much of a problem answering back off of starter Scott Diamond. Charlotte scored four runs on four doubles, a triple and a single their first time through the order as they took a 4-2 lead into the third inning. Buffalo got one back immediately as its top third of the order all reached base, enough to score Pompey before a double play ended the inning. As the rain began to fall, the Knights turned on the offense once again. In the home half of the fourth, Charlotte sent eight men to the dish, plating four more for an 8-3 lead. The end of the fourth also brought the end of Diamond's day. The left-handed Canuck was tagged with 12 hits and was charged with all eight runs. In the top of the sixth inning, A.J. Jimenez brought the Bisons back to within three. With Colabello standing at second base, the catcher crushed a two-run no-doubter to left. However, that's as close as the Herd would get. Bobby Korecky did yeoman's work in relief of Diamond, striking out three while giving up only one hit to fill the next three innings. Danny Barnes came on to pitch the eighth and continued to dominate the opposition. The 26-year-old righty struck out two of the three Knights that came his way. BISONS NOTES: Earlier in the day, Aaron Loup was recalled to the Blue Jays as Junior Lake was activated by the Bisons...Also prior to Sunday's action, Melky Mesa was moved to the disabled list…Bobby Korecky was then activated to fill the roster spot…Andy Burns' 25th double puts him three ahead of Domonic Brown and Jesus Montero for the team lead…Left-handed hitters are now 0-for-35 with 15 strikeouts against Danny Barnes. http://i.imgur.com/1L0Ph7a.png http://i.imgur.com/CZLoCnt.png http://i.imgur.com/gY86Kpy.png http://www.milb.com/assets/images/6/8/4/187065684/cuts/SmithHRRickZ640_6v16d7d1_ol14dr1i.jpg Manchester, NH - Dwight Smith Jr. went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI but first-place Altoona salvaged the final game of the series in New Hampshire with an 11-5 win over the Fisher Cats on Sunday afternoon. Smith tripled and scored in the second inning, singled in two runs in the sixth and hit his 11th home run in the ninth for the Fisher Cats (61-66). Altoona's Erich Weiss had a tremendous day for the Curve (69-57). He doubled, tripled and homered and drove in seven runs. Weiss homered off New Hampshire starter John Straka in the first and doubled in three runs in the second for a 5-0 lead. Weiss tripled in a run in the fifth inning and added a sacrifice fly in the seventh as Altoona opened a 10-4 lead. He had a chance for a cycle, but grounded out in the top of the ninth. Tyler Eppler (8-9) allowed four runs on seven hits in seven innings for the win. Straka (1-1) took the loss in his second start with the Fisher Cats. Altoona's Tomas Morales hit a pinch-hit home run in the top of the ninth inning, the first of his career. The Fisher Cats open a week-long roadtrip in Portland on Monday night against the Sea Dogs. RHP Conner Greene (4-5, 5.07) starts for New Hampshire against Portland RHP Teddy Stankiewicz (4-8, 5.01). Game time is 7:00 p.m. and coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network. The Lugnuts maintained a 1.5-game lead over both the Great Lakes Loons and Lake County Captains for the second and final Eastern Division playoff spot. 14 games remain in the Midwest League regular season. Ryan Borucki (Win, 9-4) turned in five scoreless innings for the third time in his last four starts, lowering his ERA to 2.56 - good for third-best in the MWL. Lansing broke a scoreless tie thanks in part to the weather, with a surprise, brisk shower sweeping in during the bottom of the fifth. Faced with the conditions, South Bend starter Casey Bloomquist issued a rare walk to Justin Atkinson and tossed a pair of wild pitches to give the Lugs a 1-0 lead. The Lugnuts increased that lead to 3-0 in the sixth on an Atkinson sacrifice fly and a combination Lane Thomas steal / Alberto Mineo throwing error, with Thomas jogging home when Mineo's peg toward third base sailed into left field. The Cubs edged back in the game on a Mineo RBI single in the seventh off Tom Robson and a Roberto Caro RBI single in the eighth off Jackson Lowery. Lowery (Save, 4) held them off from there, pitching the final two innings and striking out two batters. In defeat, South Bend left fielder Caro went 4-for-4. Lugnuts first baseman Juan Kelly was hit by a pitch in his first plate appearance to extend his consecutive on-base streak to 21 games. The Lugs embark on an eight-game road trip Monday, traveling first to Dayton, OH, for the first of four games against the Dragons at 7:00 p.m. Lansing right-hander Josh DeGraaf (5-6, 3.20) starts the opener against Dayton right-hander Tony Santillan (2-2, 6.41). The Lugnuts return home to Cooley Law School Stadium for a three-game series against the Bowling Green Hot Rods from August 31-September 2, the final homestand of the regular season.
