As the North Carolina rainfall continued to build, it appeared to wash away the Herd's chances at a second straight win.
The Buffalo Bisons built and early two-run lead but couldn't keep up to the offensive outburst by the Charlotte Knights, as the hometown team took the rain-drenched Sunday evening affair at BB&T Ballpark with an 8-5 win.
The Herd wasted little time getting on the scoreboard while the field was dry.
Dalton Pompey took the fourth pitch of the game and hammered it onto the concourse in right for his fourth home run of the campaign
Next up was Darrell Ceciliani and he drove a ball even further than Pompey's, but to the deepest part of the field, slamming it off the wall in center. Ceciliani then moved up 90 feet as Matt Dominguez ripped a single off of the glove of shortstop Eddy Alvarez.
Chris Colabello made it four hits in four at-bats for Buffalo, as he cashed in Ceciliani with liner to center field.
The Knights seemed to not have much of a problem answering back off of starter Scott Diamond. Charlotte scored four runs on four doubles, a triple and a single their first time through the order as they took a 4-2 lead into the third inning.
Buffalo got one back immediately as its top third of the order all reached base, enough to score Pompey before a double play ended the inning.
As the rain began to fall, the Knights turned on the offense once again. In the home half of the fourth, Charlotte sent eight men to the dish, plating four more for an 8-3 lead.
The end of the fourth also brought the end of Diamond's day. The left-handed Canuck was tagged with 12 hits and was charged with all eight runs.
In the top of the sixth inning, A.J. Jimenez brought the Bisons back to within three. With Colabello standing at second base, the catcher crushed a two-run no-doubter to left.
However, that's as close as the Herd would get.
Bobby Korecky did yeoman's work in relief of Diamond, striking out three while giving up only one hit to fill the next three innings.
Danny Barnes came on to pitch the eighth and continued to dominate the opposition. The 26-year-old righty struck out two of the three Knights that came his way.
BISONS NOTES:
Earlier in the day, Aaron Loup was recalled to the Blue Jays as Junior Lake was activated by the Bisons...Also prior to Sunday's action, Melky Mesa was moved to the disabled list…Bobby Korecky was then activated to fill the roster spot…Andy Burns' 25th double puts him three ahead of Domonic Brown and Jesus Montero for the team lead…Left-handed hitters are now 0-for-35 with 15 strikeouts against Danny Barnes.

LANSING, Mich. - The Lansing Lugnuts (28-28, 64-62) may have opened their seven-game homestand by getting swept in four games by Great Lakes, but they closed it with a series victory over the Eastern Division's best team, edging the South Bend Cubs (36-20, 77-48), 3-2, on Sunday at Cooley Law School Stadium.
The Lugnuts maintained a 1.5-game lead over both the Great Lakes Loons and Lake County Captains for the second and final Eastern Division playoff spot. 14 games remain in the Midwest League regular season.
Ryan Borucki (Win, 9-4) turned in five scoreless innings for the third time in his last four starts, lowering his ERA to 2.56 - good for third-best in the MWL.
Lansing broke a scoreless tie thanks in part to the weather, with a surprise, brisk shower sweeping in during the bottom of the fifth. Faced with the conditions, South Bend starter Casey Bloomquist issued a rare walk to Justin Atkinson and tossed a pair of wild pitches to give the Lugs a 1-0 lead.
The Lugnuts increased that lead to 3-0 in the sixth on an Atkinson sacrifice fly and a combination Lane Thomas steal / Alberto Mineo throwing error, with Thomas jogging home when Mineo's peg toward third base sailed into left field.
The Cubs edged back in the game on a Mineo RBI single in the seventh off Tom Robson and a Roberto Caro RBI single in the eighth off Jackson Lowery.
Lowery (Save, 4) held them off from there, pitching the final two innings and striking out two batters.
In defeat, South Bend left fielder Caro went 4-for-4.
Lugnuts first baseman Juan Kelly was hit by a pitch in his first plate appearance to extend his consecutive on-base streak to 21 games.
The Lugs embark on an eight-game road trip Monday, traveling first to Dayton, OH, for the first of four games against the Dragons at 7:00 p.m. Lansing right-hander Josh DeGraaf (5-6, 3.20) starts the opener against Dayton right-hander Tony Santillan (2-2, 6.41).
The Lugnuts return home to Cooley Law School Stadium for a three-game series against the Bowling Green Hot Rods from August 31-September 2, the final homestand of the regular season. For more information or to purchase your tickets, call 517-485-4500 or visit lansinglugnuts.com.
