we discussed this yesterday in the General Blue Jays thread. You're late to the party But, to answer the question you posed, no it wont alter the Jays trade deadline plans. The front office cannot count on Manoah contributing anything this season, so his rehab starting date is a non-factor. Should he eventually gear up for a starter's pitch count, him even getting back up to the big squad would likely necessitate an injury to a current starter, or him being used as a reliever, which ... just wouldn't make sense when they would want as many innings as he could deliver in the last month or so of the season for his own injury recovery. Chances are, that would occur in AAA until their season is over.

There's a couple mildly intriguing guys also way way down the pecking order just following for fun Pat Gallagher, 25, converted to the pen this season and just moved up to NH, where he's striking out 12 per nine, walking 2 per 9. No idea on what he throws though. I'm also following Nate Garkow, 27, - this guys numbers are just weird. They plucked him out of independent ball a year or two ago. His WHIP in AA this year in his first 10 innings is 0.5, 12.9 K/9, 3.7 BB per 9. Way too early to call them anything, but... just fun to keep tabs on as guys that might show up on the 40 man one day and get a cup of coffee in the show

Speaking for me alone, I don't generally pay attention to mocks because there's so many things that we, and they, don't know about the kids, the possible backroom deals and what a team is targeting based on their pool money. Is Holliday the consensus #1? Or do the Nationals value pitching more? Look at the last few drafts alone where a consensus top X pick slid to the Jays unexpectedly. I find, for myself, the less I get excited about any particular draft eligible individual, the less upset it makes me when they pick someone else.

I don't think there's any question at all they want to add at least 1 pen arm, possibly even 2 with the skillset they feel can be high leverage or "closer" material, regardless of how Hoffman performs.

I suppose there's a non-zero chance they use him as a long man in the pen to piggy-back Lauer starts, but that feels like such a long shot and all kinds of things would have to go wrong in the bullpen for that to be an option. Like... 5+ more guys on the IL level bad
