    i doubt MLB would have ever levied a suspension that long in the first place if there was even the most remote of possibilities it could get thrown out entirely.

    I'm definitely not opposed to a Pollack signing though if he was willing to be a bench guy.

    Yeah, 161 wRC+ vs lefties last year, 130 for his career. If he's the right price he could definitely be ideal. Absent that type of pickup I suspect though we'll see Merrifield out there replacing one of them against lefties with Espinal playing 2b. That would be pretty decent. Merrifield career aginst lefties is 115 and Espinal 125.

    If you want to see some upside, just consider that he's an extreme left handed pull hitter that won't have to deal with extreme shifting going forward. That alone should bump the overall offense a few points. It's not going to turn him into Barry Bonds, but a 115 wRC+ isnt hard to see as a possibility.

    There's definitely some luck involved ibn how some defensive metrics are calculated, but when you have 99th percentile jump and 70th percentile speed, chances are you won't fluctuate that much in the metrics that matter.

    Yeah, I was looking at the rest of the free agent OF options... there's not much out there that fit that bill. One of KK or Varsho will likely sit against lefties, and they'll do need something to replace that. Tommy Pham?

    Seems to me both sides dealth from a position of depth and strength to get something they didn't have, and Arizona got the Jays to kick in Gurriel, who was basically a bench bat in the hopes they can get any kind of useful season out of him before letting him either walk in free agency or deal at the deadline if he does get the dead cat bounce. A good old fashioned baseball trade.

    Moreno is the one catching prospect that might actually be a good catcher though, regardless of how his bat turns out. The fact that I'm really intrigued to see how Moreno does in Arizona tells me that both sides got a pretty good deal. Best player in the trade is Varho for sure though. The upside likely favours Arizona IF Moreno becomes Varsho and Gurriel regains his power. But then they'll just let him go anyways and he'll sign somewhere else.

    LOL, would love to see Bauer throwing in Oakland 2023. All they would owe him is the pro-rated league minimum. Even they can afford that.

    I have very little faith the Gurriel returns to his 2020 form. He can't hit for power, can't field and can't get on base enough to overcome the lack of power (babip fueled 2022 aside) What's left? He's not an everday guy anymore.

    THe thing is, If i was on the diamondbacks side of this, I would probably like the trade too. From their perspective, they dealt from a position of depth, gained a position of need and can afford to take a chance on a Gurriel bounce back cheaply.

    Are you suggesting that Moreno + Gurriel is MORE valuable than Kirk + Gurriel? Wasn't it you who said you'd rather it be Kirk in the trade?

    Could. Vs Already had a near 5 WAR season. Yes, it hurts to trade prospects but until they succeed thats all they ever are. Varsho has already shown he can be what people think Moreno can be.

    His K rate isn't horrible, its really just the avg/OBP that needs to improve. With his heavy pull approach, it's not outlandish to think he'll pick up a few more hits this season with the shift restrictions. Yes, his K rate could still improve, but that's not what is holding him back from being successful.

    Bassit > Stripling, Varsho > Gurriel by a longshot, Moreno barely played last year so .... cant really say they are better or worse since they still have 2 all star caliber catchers. One could easily argue that Varsho is > than Teo depending on how you value power vs defense. Swanson > whatever shitstain they were going to have at the front and middle of the pen. I don't think it's a stretch to say the Jays are better than 2022 at all. Run prevention counts the same as runs scored, and the power loss isn't substantial. The defensive improvements are massive.

    Surgery should have taken care of the spur so that shouldnt be a concern in 2023. Did he have chroinc elbow issues in years past?

    Springer, Varsho's arm is slightly below average. Springer's is slightly above average

    I think Gurriel was just something to sweeten the pot to ensure the deal got done. Sucks at D, still can't take a walk. if he doesnt regain his power stroke... what use is he? Do you think Moreno for Vasrho straight up would have been an even trade?

    he'll probably improve that with the shift restrictions, his walk rate is only slightly below league average. 46th percentile

    Just comparing Varsho to Teo in 2022. Varsho: 7.8% BB rate, 24.5% K rate, babip .269, 27 HR. wRC+106. Premium defense in CF - 4.6 fWAR Teo: 6.4% BB, 28.4% K rate, babip .335, 25 HR, wRC +129. Bonehead defense in LF - 2.4 fWAR Varsho definitely doesn't have Teo's average exit velos, but his max exit velo is still 66th percentile. Power favours Teo by a large margin. Run prevention favours Varsho by a very large margin with some pop and he's pretty much a dead pull hitter. With the shift restrictions this upcoming season, he will likely see a slight uptick in singles getting through, not to mention more of an asset on the basepaths with the new pitching restrictions.
