  1. A hugely outsized proportion of the best games in MLB history were extra inning affairs. As a baseball fan, it really hurts to think that we may never see one again. Game 6 of the 1992 World Series is one of the best moments in this franchise's history. It wouldn't happen today. The same goes for the Marlins in 1997 and probably many other franchises. Using a gimmick for the sake of TV ratings would result in an incalculable loss for fans of the game.
  2. I would like both to become a thing, but more than anything I want someone to reject the asinine extra innings rule. I hate gimmicks so much.
  3. It's unusual for one metric to show an above average 2B and another to show them as one of the worst defenders in the league. I find that UZR is generally more in line with the eye test, but we'll get to see a lot of him this year so it will be interesting.
  4. The signing bonus makes this better for Springer, but it's a net positive for Jays fans when contracts are frontloaded. It's a strong sign to me that they intend to spend big in the future as well.
  5. It's probably bad value, but they have the money to spend and could get a prospect at the deadline if he is healthy and performing. They had the worst pitching staff in the history of baseball last season (by WAR) so something had to be done.
  6. If I'm the GM and assume a modest amount of money is left then my last big strike is going to be for a starting pitcher. Masahiro Tanaka at his 1/15 asking price is very appealing, but there are others like Paxton and Odorizzi. I like the bullpen with the recent additions and wouldn't spend on a guy like Hand if it prevented upgrades in other areas. Darren O'Day stands out as a ground ball specialist that could fill the Anthony Bass role for cheap, but there are many options. He's just an example. Regarding third base, I'd be tempted to trade for a guy like Eugenio Suarez, but tying ourselves into a long term deal for a mediocre defender doesn't really align with the goals of the FO. Instead, I'd look to add a player on a 1 year deal and reevaluate during next year's FA class. That could be Semien, Gregorius, Turner, Simmons, Hernandez, etc. It's a game of musical chairs and someone will settle for a 1 year deal. I'm not against Bryant either if the money is there and it doesn't take a top 5 prospect. Lineup: Springer Biggio Bichette Hernandez Guerrero Jr Tellez Gurriel Gregorius Jansen Bench: Grichuk Catcher Espinal Davis Rotation: Ryu Tanaka Ray Pearson Roark (maybe) Bullpen: Yates Romano Dolis Chatwood Merryweather O'Day Stripling Borucki
  7. Where are you getting that? He's been consistently awful at 2B and ranks 29th out of 35 second basemen that have played 1000 innings since 2018 (-6.1 UZR/150). Maybe he won't regress on the basepaths, but he's decidedly average in that regard to begin with. I think I'd rather have a guy like Santiago Espinal, who is a better defender and baserunner. It's not like Hernandez has even an average bat to make up for it.
  8. This signing closely resembles that of Maicer Izturis.
  9. MLBTR says 177 million now
  10. Cronenworth, Profar, and Kim at 2B now. I don't see where they all get playing time.
  11. Anthony Bass gets a 2 year deal from the Marlins. I'm happy to see him get rewarded for a solid year.
  12. I feels like that is what happened. It's unusual to see a guy leave a national broadcast where he is beloved for a local morning talk show. Maybe it's a step up in pay, but it's a very large step down in prestige. Most of his former audience will forget he even exists.
  13. I remember watching them on the Score when I was a kid and then it morphed into a great partnership. Poor Tim seemed heartbroken when he broke the news.
  14. This isn't really baseball, but Sid Seixeiro is leaving Tim and Sid for a local morning talk show. I'm going to miss his passion and crazy Jays hot takes that were usually wrong.
  15. You support the team and don't live in the city, same for me. Nationwide support is a strength of the team in my eyes. I'm puzzled by your attitude.
  16. Talent and dollars aside, it's always a big plus to have a player who wants to be a Blue Jay.
  17. I think that the majority of the online presence and TV viewership comes from outside of the city. We have a unique situation amongst MLB teams, an entire country backs the team. That shouldn't be seen as a criticism of the city, but the team wouldn't exist if it was just Toronto.
  18. It probably has little to do with the city itself, at least for baseball. The Jays are Canada's team.
  19. If we wanted to give Vlad Jr. a handful of games at third, he would fit in nicely with La Stella, playing 3rd against lefties.
  20. BA ranked Groshans in the 30s
  21. Rowdy Tellez bats from the left side.
  22. A key takeaway from this Brantley incident is that we have at least 16 million left to spend. That may have seemed like a given, but it's nice to know.
  23. I'd actually prefer Rosario on a 1 year deal to Brantley on a 3 year deal if we end up needing some LF/DH depth.
  24. Nice move for them. He'll be solid in that weak division.
  25. Brantley at 2/32 would have been decent value, but if we had to add a third year then I'm not upset. It's a lot to offer when a guy at a position where we don't need help. We can always pivot to another DH type if they find a nice trade for one of our outfielders or Tellez.
