  1. Problem is, you'd likely end up trading some of the prospects if there's no room on the 40-man.. don't forget about the Rule 5 draft.
  2. Delmon Young is a free agent--he's not returning to Tampa Bay after the season. He was only signed to find a fill-in DH for Luke Scott, who's on the DL.
  3. That Travis Snider looks bad on both sides..
  4. There's also the risk Boston does something stupid and trades Bogaerts for veterans, like they did with Hanley Ramirez, even though Boston won a World Series with that trade.
  5. It's part of the reason I hated the Iglesias trade. Bogaerts is likely going to end up at 3B--Xander's range and defense are dropoffs from Jose Iglesias at SS--and we haven't seen him hit yet, because John Farrell won't play him. After Bogaerts, Boston doesn't have any other SS prospects that are ready, as Deven Marrero, their next SS prospect, is years away and just reached AA.
  6. Wrong: Iglesias in Detroit--.302/.343/.365--Tigers are 13-7 in last 20 since the trade and better defensively at SS.
  7. Exactly. And Cherington has already made several bad trades, trading for Bailey, Hanrahan (who both blew their elbows out), trading Jose Iglesias to Detroit so they could get Jake Peavy, a pitcher with injury history and not part of Boston's long term plans--Bogaerts isn't the defensive whiz Iglesias is--it'll be worse if it helps Detroit get back to the World Series. Boston's been a mediocre team since the Iglesias trade, BTW, playing barely .500 ball. The Matt Thornton trade wasn't very good either--he's been hurt as well and awful.
  8. Checking out the top 50 MLB prospects from 2011: BUSTS: Jesus Montero Manny Banuelos Casey Kelly(injury) Mike Montgomery Dellin Betances Christian Frederich Tyler Matzek Amazingly, only Travis D'Arnaud was in the top 50 Jays prospects. Still shocked how much of a bust Jesus Montero is--wasn't he supposed to be a huge bat for either the Yanks or Mariners?
  9. Which was already spent taking on Jake Peavy's contract--remember? It was a salary dump. Don't forget, their payroll commitments for 2014 don't include arb raises and options on Jon Lester.
  10. Yanks are in the same boat--they haven't developed an All-Star since Robinson Cano.
  11. Reyes has missed most of the season due to injury. And most of the negative WAR is Izturis's fault. Drew and Napoli are on 1-year deals BTW.. there's no guarantee they'll return to Boston next year. Victorino's and Drew's WAR looks like an anomaly compared to previous seasons.
  12. Keep in mind most of Boston's current players are from the previous regime. Jury's still out on Middlebrooks--and Boston's prospects were frequently traded when Epstein was there for guys like Adrian Gonzalez--which didn't work out for Boston. And don't get me started on Hanley Ramirez, Justin Masterson, and Josh Reddick. And Cherington hasn't been great either (see Andrew Bailey and Joel Hanrahan)
  13. Just be lucky we're not the Tigers or Angels farm--both ranked 29th and 30th.
  14. And regarding the Jays: 22) Toronto Blue Jays (1): Another system gutted by recent trades by a team pushing to win in 2013. Remaining strengths: pitching, with Aaron Sanchez, Roberto Osuna, Marcus Stroman, and underappreciated Sean Nolin a nice quartet at the top and more live arms behind them. Weaknesses: they have a lot of tools guys who haven't shown they can play baseball yet. If they pan out, the Jays will move back up the list quickly. Nolin and Stroman's progress will likely lift our ranking on the 2014 report, as will Aaron Sanchez.
  15. Boston's farm system is in the top 10--but it's not close to the best farm system: 9) Boston Red Sox (11): Very solid farm system. Strengths: Bogaerts can/will be an All-Star, and Bradley should be a strong regular. Good depth in Grade B-/C+ types. System could jump several spots next year if low-level sleepers (Cody Kukuk, Jose Vinicio for example) take a step forward. Weaknesses: some of the tools guys and livelier arms haven't developed as hoped. Vinicio significantly regressed, as has Cody Kukuk. Jackie Bradley will only help if Ellsbury leaves via free agency(questionable), Xander Bogaerts is too early to call.
  16. International players won't be available for teams to sign for just money if Bud Selig gets his international draft he wants. So you can count that out. Boston's 2nd tier players they signed are not the reason the Red Sox are competing-- it's more due to David Ortiz, Dustin Pedroia, and Jacoby Ellsbury being healthy, and Nava surprising everyone. This is still basically the same team as last year..when it was 100% healthy before their swoon when David Ortiz got hurt. Boston is going to face a real test when Ellsbury, Napoli and Drew leave via free agency this offseason..remember, Boston blew a ton of money taking on Peavy's contract, not to mention they bullpen help, a 1B, a LF and a SS, depending on Bogaerts' development.
  17. With the Mets injuries, he may be up as soon as September.. Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler will be shut down soon.
  18. Well, Boston continues to screw around--John Farrell wasted his bullpen, letting Brayan Villareal in because they didn't want to use Koji Uehara. Villareal walked in the winning run(Scutaro)--and cost themselves another game. Tampa's now in 1st, and with series against L.A. (Dodgers) and the Orioles coming up, they can't afford to lose these games, especially with Tampa, Cleveland, and NY getting hot. Thanks to that loss, Boston's lead is down to 5 games on Cleveland, and they're tied with Tampa for 1st in the AL East and the 1st wild card. Bogaerts went 0-3 BTW..
  19. No help for the Yanks--Oakland leads 4-0 in the 1st, as Joe Saunders stinks it up. We'll see what happens with the Boston game.
  20. Too bad for the Yankees that this win won't do any good--the Rays lead 5-2 vs. Baltimore, and Oakland is playing a bad Seattle team. Only hope is that Boston loses to SF tonight..
  21. Well, d'Arnaud is still looking for a hit--and he's stopped walking as well--2 k's tonight. Perhaps the Braves have watched video on him while he was taking all those walks in San Diego.
  22. Not gonna happen--they have Nava, Gomes, Victorino already, and Bradley on the way, and possibly Ellsbury returning if he resigns with Boston.
  23. That roster is a mess. They don't have much on the farm.. and they have a number of holes on that roster.
  24. Because the O's coaching staff knows nothing about taking walks--they're last in the AL in walks. Good thing they hit..
  25. Why not? At least Machado has seen/will see the playoff in his prime, unlike Trout and Harper, whose teams are headed for rebuilds.
