If you want to force a comp for DJL you use someone like Jose Bautista - another guy who had something really click later in their career. Jays were wise to never give Bautista his mega-extension and his last good year ended up being his age 34 season. Decent chance the Yankees are paying $90M for ~3 more good years from DJ and the Yankees know it. If they get lucky he's still useful once his skills start to erode but he is a slapdick player so he might just pull a hard Daniel Murphy and cease being good at like 33. The years are kind of irrelevant on some of these guys. You assume they will be dead money before the end of the deal. Kind of misleading to even look at the AAV. $90M is more than people thought DJL would get at the outset of the offseason so even if Toronto only offered $78M I'm happy that someone bid the Yankees up.

Kluber is just going to pick the best "fit" so the team would need to convince him in non-monetary ways. I assume most teams will be willing to pay him a fair one year salary. Ross Atkins was the director of player development when Cleveland acquired and developed Kluber so maybe there is something there... It's not clear if Paxton wants a $12M pillow contract of if he is trying to max out the years? If Tanaka wants $15M he might settle for a bit less...

Yeah those older guys were being abused. It was back-to-back outings, not enough days off in between multi-inning outings, etc. The modern approach is more gentle. There are also more advanced ways to measure pitcher fatigue.
