It would be very bold to ask two players to change positions. Probably more trouble than it's worth for 2025.

Damn, that sucks. I was wondering why the whiffs were gone when the velo was 100% back. The bright side is that this might be fixable. It does look like it's just arm slot. Arm slot is one of those weird little injury nuances. A guy can be healthy, able to pitch, have his old velocity, but for some reason he can't come out of quite the same arm slot.

Jim is right but my assumption would be that he gets $40M in salary and some portion of it is deferred and paid out on a schedule. So even if he opts out after 2025, Boston pays him $40M for 2025 eventually. I doubt the opt outs change the deferred money already earned.

I know the childish back and forth between posters is ugly and unattractive but when you come in and essentially just say "I don't like projection systems" in way more words, people are going to roll their eyes at you. My guess is that he doesn't opt out. He was the only viable 3B on the market this offseason. What is going to change in one year? Maybe if he is solid in 2025 and 2026 he can threaten to opt out so that Boston extends him. Taking 3/$120 is kind of a no-brainer if you have any confidence in yourself though, if the top alternative was something like 6/$170. If he is mediocre after this deal he can probably still get some $10M or $15M AAVs, and if he is good in 2027 he can probably tack a three year deal onto his career. Christian Walker just got one at 34.

I remember reading that he does not have the arm for the left side of the infield. Perhaps he is a 2B/LF/1B/DH this year and then in 2026, assuming he sticks, he is the 2B when Gimenez slides over to SS.

Yes. And the short term deal thing worked out for Matt Chapman (played well and got his extension) probably because the under the hood stats love him (he crushes the ball).

They are very optimistic but it's easy to see why. People love to throw Jeff McNeil comps in every lefty 2B prospect with quiet tools but Will Wagner might literally be Jeff McNeil if WW can actually play 2B. Willy in the minors .297 .402 .441 McNeil in the minors .312 .380 .444

The temporary CF will be a wide open competition. Not sure it goes to Loperfido. I think backup CF on the bench is also wide open. Lukes - older, still has 1 option but at at 30 years old the organization might give him a "make or break" chance to man the position for a month. He actually has the best offensive projections of all competitors. Clase - the most prospect pedigree. one option year left. generally okay projections. switch hitter. sucked in AAA last year. Loperfido - two options, so less urgency to get a look at him this year. struggled in his rookie season. Straw - the best defensive option, with the worst offensive projections, but he's not on the 40 man so they have to punt somebody to put him on the team. Berroa - the dark horse. two options left. switch hitter. Realistically it will be a platoon. I kind of think they go with Lukes and someone else in a platoon. Also, I think your projected bench needs someone with actual SS chops. FGDC has Leo Jimenez on it.

Horwitz will miss 6 - 8 weeks. The surgery on his right wrist was to fix "chronic symptoms." Kinda weird. Makes one feel mildly better about the Gimenez trade.
