Not putting on the hit and run with a 2-0 count to Pillar with Pompey on first right after a mound visit is a strong indication of a clueless manager. Anyone with moderate baseball sense knew Pillar was getting a fastball for a strike there and it turned out to be a perfect hit and run pitch. If Gibby's excuse or thought process was "well Smoak just walked and he threw two balls to Pillar so he's off, let's take at least one", then that makes him even more incompetent. Cishek is no scrub and his walk to Smoak was competitive and the first two pitches to Pillar barely missed. Pitchers of his caliber can throw fastballs over the middle of the plate in their sleep. To assume the 2-0 pitch to Pillar would be anything but a fastball strike after a mound visit is absurd. Gibbons lasted this long because this offence is built on the HR and the majority of his managing is keeping the clubhouse civil.
