This team feels split in what it wants to do sometimes. It's like the team made a deal with Lou or some other "old school" hockey guy in that the analytics group will be heard often as long as the team appeals to the old schooler's yearning for big, gritty guys every once in a while (eg. Keaton Middleton pick, Matt Martin signing).

I'm not a fan of taking goalie prospects in the first round or two. Much tougher to guage than forwards and defensemen.

Eh, I like the deal. From what I've read, his numbers are above average (via HD SV%) and his cap hit is right around market value for a similar goaltender. Plus, it's better than risking a 1st/2nd round pick on a goaltender prospect, not that I think that was the Leafs' plan. They are voodoo~

The most I can say right now is that this front office doesn't care about public image, even when they plan to put the team's best starting pitcher (at least, this season) in the bullpen to save his arm. As for whether there is evidence to back up this move, I don't know at the time. I remember a similar controversy regarding Stephen Strasburg and Matt Harvey.
