  1. 127 wRC+. At around 125 over ~550 PA the last two years. Still good.
  2. This is silly. Players can say whatever they want.
  3. Is it even possible to throw a ball that hard?
  4. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/what-did-the-blue-jays-do-to-ezequiel-carrera/ Perfect example of Fangraphs pumping out too many articles. Content like this is garbage.
  5. They're worse than boring - all the passed balls ad wild pitches aggressively ruin my enjoyment of the game. It's just sloppy, ugly baseball.
  6. Is velocity separation between fastball and off-speed stuff still a thing? Felix and his 90 mph change are pretty effective. Aren't other aspects of the pitch like infinitely more important?
  7. I don't think so. Paying a player 16-17M when you could have had him for 8-10 is pretty bad business.
  8. I mean, Josh Thole is terrible. Since coming here he has a 45 wRC+ and -1.1 fWAR in 152 games. He's played in parts of 4 seasons and has never had a positive fWAR. His Steamer600 is 9 runs below replacement. ZiPS has him at around -1.5 wins/600. There are valid reasons for wanting Dickey, but "meh it's unreasonable to expect better than Thole as your backup catcher" is not one of those reasons.
  9. I don't think you just assume that you can't do better than Josh Thole as a backup C. This offseason, guys like Hundley, Castro, and Suzuki will all sign for <5M to backup, and are objectively better than Thole. All project at 0.5-0.7 runs above replacement over 200PA. Thole projects at around 0.3 to 0.5 runs below replacement. That's like a 1-win swing for less than a 4M investment, and a lot more than that if Martin goes down for an extended period.
  10. Ironically, Dickey moving on would really extend my Dickey.
  11. Hasn't been the same since missing a few months with an MCL injury.
  12. I think you can pretty much just disregard both the Dickey effect and Josh Thole when discussing Dickey's value. The opportunity cost of committing to a sub-replacement level backup catcher is probably close to a win if you feel the FO can identify and acquire a 0.5-1 run backup C. The point remains though that Dickey is a durable league average SP and the only valid reason for not wanting him back on a 1/8-10 deal is "I hate watching him".
  13. I kind of think that the second C spot is an easy area to add wins. There always seems to be a Phegley/Ross/Flowers type looking for a home on a cheap 1-2 year deal. Jose Molina is a perfect example of a guy who contributed wins here in a backup role for almost no investment. I'd love to add a strong backup that you can realistically expect to provide value in a backup role, and who could competently play long stretches above replacement level if your starter goes down. With even top catchers topping out a ~130 games a year, having a good catching tandem is great roster management IMO.
  14. So, reminder that any cuts have to be made before the draft begins on the 18th. Picks evaporate at the start of the draft. Not sure anyone will have to make cuts though.
  15. I dunno, I think you could probably make the argument that Thole is one of the very worst second catchers in the league. Of the teams you list. I'd much rather have Trevor Brown or Martin Maldonado catch 5 days a week than Josh Thole.
  16. Yeah. It's pretty much a certainty from his responses that Saudners has no idea about the controversy, and just thought "whatever, All Lives Matter is a nice message, I'm not going to pile on".
  17. What a hackey, irresponsible article. He was trying to give a generic, boring "yeah I loved the anthem, man" answer, and didn't even notice the alteration. I'm sure has no idea about the fake "All Lives Matter" controversy, because he doesn't live on the internet, so of course he went with the generic "yeah, good message" answer when asked directly about it. Poor guy is about to become a victim of outrage culture and sensationalist reporting I hope he refuses to apologize.
  18. Taking a chance on a guy like that at the cost of a reliever is absolutely worth it. I'm just happy that you probably got a couple games worse ROS. You're one of the teams in the mix for the last few playoff spots, so that could matter.
  19. Yay, Dinger is weaker this year.
  20. What you suggest makes perfect baseball sense. But, I watch baseball for fun. I watch more Jays games than any other team. I hate watching Dickey, and I hate watching Thole. I hope he finishes his career in San Diego and is never seen on my TV again.
