Its gut punch after gut punch for Ottawa fans. Five years ago they watched the most beloved player in team history, and a future HOFer, play out his last year in another jersey because they wouldn't pay him a fair price. Now they're watching another HOFer, and a generational talent at that, leave at 28 years old. The CTC is going to be empty this year.

This really sucks. Watching a generational talent leave because of mismanagement from the owner down
  3. Anybody have recommendations for places to stay in Boston? I’m catching the jays there next weekend.
  4. Yeah, the team cut payroll and let him rebuild for 3 years
  5. Payroll under JPR topped out in the middle of the pack in MLB - 16th in the league was the highest, I believe. Payroll has been towards the back of the top-10 in baseball every year since 2013, topping out at 5th in 2017. And that's with an actual investment in the draft and international markets, which didn't happen before. The JPR years were certainly dark, but a huge part of that was Godfrey being terrible at his job and ownership not investing in the product.
  6. Looking at the Ryan situation, he was entering his age-30 season and was coming off 3 straight seasons of 2.5+ fWAR. Signed for 5 years, 47M. Would have been analogous to the Indians giving Kenley Jansen 5/80 or something last offseason.
  7. The AJ Burnett contract worked out very well. The Ryan deal not so much.
  8. He most certainly did say that.
  9. Yeah, sure. But I don't think many GMs would have made the playoff in his shoes - he was given the impossible task of winning in the ALE on a small budget without being allowed to tear it down completely to amass talent.
  10. I meant it in the sense that I think there's a good chance his replacement would have been worse at the job than he was. He certainly had his warts, but I think he was mostly competent at a time when there weren't many GMs who would have had even the modest success he did given his constraints.
  11. I'm sure he oversold his ability to compete on a small budget in order to get the job. Reality is that we could have done a lot worse during those years than the JPR front office, especially if you don't speculate about how much more some generic replacement would have convinced ownership to spend on prospects.
  12. I think she writes good baseball articles. She's just not the kind of person that fans should be expecting insight from in a chat. IMO there's a place for softer content like that at Fangraphs if it's well-written, and her articles are well-written.
  13. I still think JPR did a good job with what he had to work with. He assembled some legitimately good teams under a payroll that was completely dwarfed by Boston and New York, and was asked to compete in an environment with only one WC. Those same teams in the NL would have probably won multiple division titles. He wasn't given any money to spend on the draft or international free agency.
  14. The only current chats that are informative are Sullivan's. I don't really think Rowley or Jaffe know that much about baseball, and Sawchik is too busy hedging and giving caveats that his responses are meaningless. I guess McDaniel's could be good, but they're so snarky and condescending that the cringe factor makes them unreadable. I do think Rowley is a gifted writer though.
  15. Holy crap the Royals have a wRC+ of 48 start of June

I’ve become concerned about the viability of a Melnyk-owned team surviving in this market. So high.

Everyone seems to be saying that Heiskanen is off the table. If that’s true, Dorion should not be talking to Dallas
  18. 2.75M guarantee for a serviceable arm. I don’t have a problem with it

Things are getting to the point where the franchise is in trouble. The team is carrying $235M in debt, attendance took a nosedive last year, and they're about to trade a future HOFer. They're also going to ice the same team that finished 2nd last this year, only without Karlsson and Hoffman. Probable bottom-3 finish this year, and they don't even own their 1st. There's going to be nobody in the seats, and as long as Melnyk is owner there's no end in sight.
  20. Getting s*** on every time you make a post would take its toll, even if warranted. I can’t imagine she finds the job much fun at this point.
  21. Seems to be Cobb for McCarthy
  22. Congrats on acquiring Cobb Boxy!
  23. My cuts: Jose Albertos Mark Zagunis Pick 78 available for an upgrade on pick 48.
