    Yup. Rogers has this s*** wrapped up tight. Only way they don't make money is if AA and Beeston move up the ladder, lol.

    Well they knew it would have to go up just for the contract structures and arbitration cases. If they didn't account for additional needs then they are absolutely retarded even more so than I thought.

    Exactly. This team is a marketing tool as much if not more than it is a baseball operation to Rogers. If spending on FA's gets Rogers the marketing exposure they desire then I assume they will. Additional gate revenue is just an added bonus.

    Yup, and if FA's believe the Jays have something here they will at the very least have some interest. At this point it comes down to what kind of finances AA has to work with. If AA doesn't have the money then this team will have to pray for excellent health in 2014 and we likely see a regime change at the end of that year. That being said, I am sure Beeston doesn't want to go out as the bumbling fool who headed this ship right into the ground. I bet he urges ownership to anti up.

    I think it's going to be higher than that, but like I said who really knows. I just find it hard to believe they spend the way they did only to penny pinch the year after.

    I don't get how people think Rogers isn't cleaning up financially with the Jays. They use them to market their products and essentially have to pay them nothing since they own the Jays, the networks, etc, etc, etc. It's more a matter of how much more value they think they can gain for every dollar spent since its not just a baseball operation.

    AA is going to be a desperate man this winter. He might as well f*** this team for the next decade in an attempt to save his job with a post season appearance or two.

    I am not sure I completely buy into this "no one wants to play here bs". I am sure it is very relevant, but I don't think it applies to everyone. Fact is the Jays haven't really been big FA players in a very long time and that likely is the bigger reason why. It's no secret the Jays went all in this year and now everyone knows it. Sure it didn't work out at all, but this team has some significant players and a couple key additions could get this team on track for the short-term.

    If AA has any plans of saving his job he will need more money plain and simple. The state of this teams current contracts and arbitration eligible players will leave him with nothing to work with if there isn't extra money. At this point they really only have 2 options; push forward and go for it (additional funds required) or blow it up and rebuild (almost no chance of this happening). I would think there will be some funds to work with and if it isn't enough I bet he empties the farm.

    Yeah that would be interesting. I think many knew the payroll could go up, but by how much it did, I doubt anyone expect that, especially in one winter. Fact is the payroll will have to go up again with many salary increases and arbitration eligible players and the Jays FO obviously knew this last winter. It really comes down to how much rope AA has. Did ownership promise him just enough to cover raises and filling out the roster with cheap options or is there more money for the "right" players?

    Ken, so what your saying is don't even bother to try and attract top FA's? Kind of like a self fulfilling prophecy where you convince yourself you can't so you don't even bother. I don't care if every top FA AA goes after rejects playing here, its still his job and if were always going to settle for mediocrity then whats the point? Might as well blow it all up if that is the case. The fact that this team took on some big contracts this past winter tells me they are at least willing. Why be a defeatist? I get that its highly unlikely, but you still have to try unless you want to see AA unload all our remaining top prospects for a couple more shot in the arms and then we sit in the basement for a decade.

    Rasmus should be able to net us a decent prospect and if Lind keeps this up for the rest of the year he should be able to net us something as well. Not expecting the world for either of these guys, but its nice to know that they have value, especially Lind who before the season started couldn't have been given away for free.

    Our offense has shown some good signs the past month without Reyes. You add both Reyes and Cano (or some other 2B improvement) and our lineup will be good enough to sustain multiple injuries and still produce. Something we cannot say for our SP. As for getting rid of Romero or Buehrle's contracts, probably not going to happen unless Romero somehow pulls a 180 which seems highly doubtful. Buehrle can probably be moved if half the contract is absorbed. Players I would look to reduce payroll with are with Rasmus, Boni/Izzy and Lind. That could save us $10 to $15 million (not counting arb raises and with Linds option). With the current construction of this roster its certain payroll goes up, but by how much is the question.

    I find it hard to believe that people quickly dismiss the idea that AA may have more money to spend. Before last winter 99% of the board would have laughed hysterically at the thought of our payroll going up the way that it did, but it happened. Now I am not saying there is more money, I am just not going to completely dismiss that idea without really knowing whats what. With the extra funds becoming available to every team this winter and the fact that Rogers is probably cashing in huge on what the Jays bring to their portfolio overall, spending more brings more attention to this product which from a marketing standpoint cannot be discounted. It will be interesting to see what AA does before the start of next season, because its either going to buy him several more years at the helm or he is going to be looking for work by the end of next season if not sooner.

    I used Cano as an example. That being said they should be making an attempt at him. If they are going to throw big money around (which may or may not happen), I would rather attempt to get the best guy on the market who has a chance to still be great for quite some time and instantly makes our lineup capable of carrying this team if and when our old as s*** SP falls apart. Cano is as durable and consistent as they come and this lineup could use a guy like that. If he chooses not to come here which is likely then move to plan B which may or may not be Kinsler.

    You want to count on a guy with 29 career minor league innings as a viable option for a contender? If this team wasn't so messed up I wouldn't even be looking at Nolin as an option either so soon. Not saying he won't be an option, but right now I would rather see him get some innings under his belt in the minors. In either case AA will have a lot of work to do and this team will still probably not legitimately contend. We will probably see some of these younger prospects get flipped for aging vets as AA will be fighting for his job.

    If the offense is bolstered by a significant acquisition (ie. Cano) and the pen is shored up, then we won't necessarily need any significant arms, just solid ones. Any of Haren, Burnett, Hudson and Jimenez could fit the bill. With a rotation already consisting of Dickey, Morrow, Buehrle, Happ and Hutchison, we probably only need to add one short term veteran into the mix and will need at least 3 capable arms ready in AA or AAA. Realistically, the only capable arm in the minors who may be ready to legitimately contribute in 2014 is Nolin. Jenkins may offer a temporary stop-gap as well, but not someone we should count on. If contention remains the only option then AA has to bring in 2 more solid SP options into the high minors, find a legitimate 2B (Cano?) and bring in another veteran SP on a short term contract.

    I would much rather that route. Patch up the rotation and let the young arms have time to develop. Eventually phase the younger arms into the rotation (what little we have right now) and follow the Rays model of dealing them off before they get expensive. The Jays have the means to play with moderate to big payrolls, and I would much rather see that money put into the offense.

    I agree with you Ken. I have been saying all along that Kawasaki needs to stick when Reyes returns. If we could just give Izzy away that would work well, but your right in that Boni should have the better trade value, and he should probably be the one to go.

    If someone want's to take Izzy and his contract sure, but he doesn't make anything too significant and if were eating half his contract, then he is probably worth the half were paying for anyways. AA is going to have to get creative to clear some salary.
