We have Stilson, Carreno who are going to force their way into this pen at some point as well as Santos returning in the next week or two. Plus we have Perez who could be in the mix next season two as he works his way back from injury. Also, lets not forget about Lincoln in AAA who is a capable long man and the recently demoted Wagner who already earned a spot in this pen. That is 6 potentially solid options that will be available to start the 2014 season in addition to the 6 in our current pen who will be returning next season (minus Oliver).
We have 12 f***ing legitimate RP options to start the 2014 season as of now and I am probably missing an arm or two. Why do people want to hoard these relievers is beyond logic.
Relievers don't have nearly the impact regular players or SP's do. We have needs in both areas right now and by moving some relievers who have peak value, it will allow AA to free up $$ and acquire assets that can be flipped to help more important areas of need.
There is no point in having a shut down pen when they are not getting the opportunity to shut anything down. Pen = wasted assets at the moment.
Lets say AA moved Janssen, Delabar, Oliver and Cecil. We still have Santos, Loup, Wagner, McGowan, Perez, Perez, Lincoln, Rogers, Stilson and Careno in the mix. Go out and sign a reliever from FA and call it a day.
Also, it would allow for Delabar and Santos to get save opps and we really should try and move Santos if he can stay healthy next season. His team options kick in from 2015 - 2017 and he starts to get expensive at that point but some team would take it and send us a prospect if he can get a bunch of saves under his belt next year.
I have said numerous times we should move the entire pen if we can. That being said, you don't see Janssen as more of a priority to move? Janssen will be in his final season next year earning $4M looking for a substantial raise. Delabar makes virtually nothing and is under control until 2018.
It's fine to cash in on Delabar now if the return is significant, but Janssen is the priority.
Jay I disagree here. I think they will want him to stay but if it comes down to what will help sell this team to the fan base more easily and they feel its substantial enough Gibby will be canned.
It's not about what he has done wrong which I agree is nothing. It's about what will keep this train moving and if they can't keep fan interest at least equal to what it is this year, they are going to be in a world of trouble.
Your way off. The reason you move Janssen is because he only has one year left on the contract and will be paid $4M next year. Delabar is under team control until 2018 and makes minimal salary right now. You move Janssen first because its the smart move.
Based on what? You doubt the fan base is going to be calling for his head? Half the morons that I hear talking baseball think he should be gone, that will likely grow by seasons end. Many already questioned him being here in the first place and this is not helping his cause at all.
I am not saying I want Gibby gone because I actually like him as manager and want him to stick around, but lets be realistic here, its going to be hard to sell this team to the fan base for next season without a few major changes and if those changes come and Gibby is still around, it could be a pretty hard sell.
At the end of the day its a business and nice guys get let go all the time.
The way this team is losing right now in epic fashion, they are digging themselves into a major f***ing hole with the fan base. If ticket sales decrease next season, nothing short of making the post season will save AA's job and I bet he already knows it. I doubt he doesn't look at alternative managers this winter and if an opportunity to upgrade presents itself he may very well jump on it.
True, but that doesn't mean he won't be on the hot seat. AA and Beeston are going to be feeling a tremendous amount of pressure to find a veteran manager this winter. Not saying they can Gibby, but I wouldn't be surprised at all.
Quite a few here would love to see Janssen moved. A contender would trade something decent for him right now if he had an expiring contract, but that $4M option for 2014 makes him a valuable commodity. AA probably holds onto him anyways, so it makes no difference I guess.
Yeah I think most were surprised by that. What's different this year is that Oliver has an expiring contract though, so this really should be a no brainer at this point.
If AA doesn't move Oliver I will be lost for words. I can understand him wanting to keep Janssen since he is under contract for next season and isn't that expensive. Oliver on the other hand is going to retire after this season probably, so why not just get anything for him and save a couple bucks along the way?
