  7. Has this already been discussed? What a slutty move by the Orioles. - The Athletic: In a highly unusual and potentially alarming example of slashing expenses this winter, the Orioles asked two arbitration-eligible players to accept deferrals of a portion of their one-year salaries so the full amounts wouldn’t be on the 2021 ledger, according to multiple industry sources. As part of arbitration negotiations earlier this month, sources said, the Orioles hoped to shift roughly 25 percent of the 2021 salaries for two of their best players, infielder/outfielder Trey Mancini and outfielder Anthony Santander, to 2022 and/or 2023 as a way to keep the club’s payroll down as the Orioles struggle with cashflow after a pandemic-marred season without gate receipts. If the offers had been accepted, the Orioles could have removed roughly $1.5 million (of the approximate $7 million earmarked for the two players) from their expenditures in 2021. Both players rejected the proposal, however, with Mancini eventually settling for $4.75 million and...

  10. Angels Not Expected To Pursue Trevor Bauer January 27th, 2021 at 11:04pm CST • By Jeff Todd Though they’ve been linked in the past, at least speculatively, the Angels are evidently foregoing pursuit of top free agent starter Trevor Bauer. Maria Torres of the Los Angeles Times reports that the Los Angeles organization just doesn’t see itself as a match. The report doesn’t formally stamp out the possibility of a deal with Bauer, but it comes just shy of doing so. Torres pegs the odds of the sides lining up at “practically zero.” This development makes for a bit of a surprise given the Halos’ need for a top starter and Bauer’s ties to Southern California. One might’ve expected some effort to land the high-grade hurler, at least to a certain point in the bidding. Interestingly, it doesn’t appear to be a situation where the market has simply moved past the team’s valuation of the player. Money is a factor, to be sure. Torres indicates that the Halos’ budget likely doesn’t have anywhere near the space needed to fit Bauer — at least, barring the authorization of a pocketbook expansion by owner Arte Moreno. Cash is generally king, but it may not be the dispositive factor here. Torres cites the presence of Mickey Callaway as a major roadblock. Callaway’s relationship with Bauer is, she writes, “believed to be eroded beyond repair” from the grating time the pair spent with the Indians organization.

  19. My strongest memory of Aaron Loup was game 2 ALDS 2015 with my son. Tie game and Odor coming up. Loup was waemed up in the pen and had been shaky as of late. John Gibbons comes out the dugout while the whole place is tense and eerily silent. He puts up his left hand while this one voice in the crowd near us rings out. "No Gibby, don't do it!". Nervous laughs all around us. FWIW he made the out. "Gibby don't do it! " became a household meme for my son and I for years afterwards. Always wished we had gone to game 5 instead of 1 and 2 but oh well that's life. LOL
