    Tidbits from MLBTR: - Scouts that have spoken with Martino expect the Phillies to be active sellers, but hold onto Cliff Lee since they want to contend next year. However, rival scouts and execs anticipate that, in addition to Michael Young and Chase Utley, Jonathan Papelbon will be dealt or at least heavily shopped. We've heard previously that the Phillies are expected to ask for an astronomical haul to part with Papelbon. Papelbon also fits the bill as someone who could be kept for next year, but rivals that have spoken with Martino see too much of a need for bullpen help amongst contenders like the Red Sox and Tigers and they expect GM Ruben Amaro to get a strong offer for the closer.

    A big part of what sucks? So many of these guys could be acquired via free agency, costing no prospects and at most a draft pick Yu Darvish, Annibal Sanchez, Zack Grienke, etc al If you later have to trade to acquire guys like this, you end paying the big $ on their contracts anyway, and have to pay in prospects too. The only upside is you have fewer years on big $, but that's not even always a good thing for a guy going in to his late 30's while you still have him, as you may have missed his best years. Edit: For the record I would not have been on board with the Grienke contract - no way no how

    I can't believe I agree with this but the truth? That's where we're at. A front of the rotation starter and an upgrade at 2B or catcher probably puts us over the top for this year and the next 1-2 years as well. After that...

    The biggest barrier at getting Lee or Utley (and I love both players) is Amro Jr. He seems so delusional about the Phiilies still being contenders, and about his contracts being reasonable. Neither is true obviously.

    The truth is this: AA is too committed to this season to NOT add a starter at the deadline He will add somebody. (Hopefully someone who costs more $ than prospects) This off season after guys are back he may have an excess of starters and can deal for prospects and draft picks

    They acknowledge they rushed him last time and won't do it again - bluejays.com: Blue Jays third baseman Brett Lawrie is going to be afforded all the time he needs in the rehab of his sprained left ankle. Lawrie was rushed to the Major Leagues in April before he was ready, and as a result, he never really found the timing he needed at the plate. "We acknowledged it [that we rushed him] at the time," general manager Alex Anthopoulos said. "We had a need for his glove at the time. "Ideally we would have given him more time. ... We just decided to try to have him work through his timing here, but at least we knew defensively he was going to help. And he did, but the bat obviously didn't come along." Lawrie hit .209 with a .268 on-base percentage, five home runs, 14 RBIs and 11 runs scored in 37 games before his injury in late May sidelined him.

    Gibby hopes Wang stays in the organization. - MLB.com: The final blow came when Wang recorded just five outs while surrendering six runs on eight hits in the Blue Jays' 7-6 loss to the Tigers in front of 27,189 fans. "He competes, he's a real pro, and we like having him around," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. "We hope he chooses to stay and pitch for us down there in Triple-A, with a shot to come back. He can choose to be a free agent if he wishes, but I'd love to have him around -- he's a true pro."

    We maybe should have just decided exactly that - bullpen game on Sunday. There are many days off coming up and we could just use a 4 man rotation *IF* they give us good length outings. Is that optimal? No, but the bullpen is awesome and it's probably better than using Redmond or Romero for 1-2 starts.

    Rangers, Dodgers, Rockies In "Heavy Pursuit" Of Nolasco By Steve Adams [July 2, 2013 at 9:42pm CST] 9:42pm: The Rangers, Dodgers and Rockies "are in heavy pursuit" of Nolasco, two executives tell ESPN's Jayson Stark. The Marlins are narrowing their focus to getting a deal done quickly, because the team would like to have the returning Henderson Alvarez make tomorrow's start instead of Nolasco. The Marlins are seeking a pair of prospects in return for Nolasco. Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports adds that the Marlins are looking for prospects as opposed to a return like the Cubs received from the Orioles earlier today when they acquired Jake Arrieta and Pedro Strop for Scott Feldman. Rosenthal opines that there is no sense in the Marlins' insistance that the acquiring team absorb the remaining $5.7MM on Nolasco's deal. The Marlins entered the season with a $36.3MM payroll -- the second lowest in baseball -- and will easily receive more than that figure in revenue sharing and national TV money.
