    That 84M is deceptive though. 84M but that's just a few scrubs like Cervelli, and the big $ guys like Sabbathia, Jeter, Tex and ARod. They have a ton of guys on 1 year contracts this year (Kuroda, Overbay, Youkilis) and then big $ guys going to free agency (Cano and Granderson) To field the same team next year (a team that cost a ton of money and missed the playoffs) will easily cost 100M more. To make it better??? Who knows.

    The big question is if they will get their 2014 payroll under 189M It will cost them a ton of $$ if they don't but Steinbrenner Jr. is saying they won't reduce it below that threshold if it means fielding an "uncompetitive" team.

    Strikeouts can certainly be compensated for in other areas such as as getting lots of extra base hits. There's an acceptable trade off at some level.

    I am fully aware that's not all it was about This season's A's are clearly a bunch of cheap undervalued no names who fit the moneyball mold for the most part But they do have too many guys who swing too freely
