It's actually pretty smart if the catcher makes the throw. Anything can happen that allows the other runner to get additional bases.

You should always try to avoid sliding head first into home. To many things can go wrong resulting in injury, but sometimes it's necessary.

I personally love it dude plays to win. You’re liable to catch a cleat in the face when you go in head first. Part of the game for me.
