As other teams get better the jays sit on they asses and do nothing but talk ********.

For the third straight year. What a disappointment this management team is turning out to be.

Enough with the talk and do the right thing. Just do something to help this team get better.

Might be time to force things to get going.

You're not wrong but what can you do when you offer guys better deals and they don't want to play here?

Ryu is a fragile guy. He's going to be 33, never tossed more than 200 innings in a single season, never made more than 30 starts, and doesn't have the best K rates as some of the other elite arms do. He was also pitching in Dodgers Stadium and the NL West frequently, where some of the best pitchers parks are. When he is on the mound, he's very good though. The last two seasons especially.

I would love to see the Jays sign him. Though he's not going to go out and toss 200 + innings. He's more of a 150-180 inning type of guy.

Injury and age are major X factors but I would take a run at him.

His K rate is not elite but two things stand out. His BB% is 5.6% which is the lowest in the majors for a starter. He doesn't walk guys. According to fangraph he’s exceptional at limiting hard contact; his average exit velocity of 85.3 mph ranked in the 96th percentile. His changeup is one of the best pitches in the majors.

There's no doubt in my mind that on a per start basis, Ryu is one of the better pitchers in the league. His career stats speak for themselves: 2.98 ERA, 3.32 FIP, 3.42 xFIP. That's top notch. Obviously that's discounted to an extent due to him not pitching full seasons, but it's still nearly 750 innings of fantastic results. The big question about him is the health, but it should be encouraging that he came back from so many injuries and posted such a great season. Probably because he doesn't rely on velo to get it done, so you can also argue that he'll age well as a pitcher, barring major injury. 17-20 starts per year of Ryu is still more than worth $20M on a $/WAR basis.

I think the Blue Jays in a vacuum are the best team for him. We can easily afford the $'s he'll likely want. We also have the luxury of having enough AAA pitching depth that him getting injured wouldn't be disastrous, unlike some other teams. The Angels need durability and more than one good pitcher. They're not going to put their eggs in one basket. The Dodgers just don't seem that interested in overpaying him and probably want to set their sights higher. We should be able to beat the goddamn Twins in a bidding war.
