JFD Old-Timey Member Posted August 26, 2019 Posted August 26, 2019 The Dodgers were shutdown by the Yankees this weekend. Time for a reality check.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 26, 2019 Posted August 26, 2019 August wRC+ numbers Vlad - 198 Bo - 151 Jansen - 121 Grichuk - 144 Teo - 109 (158 in July) McKinney - 154 McGuire - 115 Add in a healthy Gurriel and squint when you look at Biggio's plate discipline, hard hit %, LD%, etc. and it's not that difficult to see why the media, who've had to endure this god awful season, are going to talk up this offense. Also - Outside of Vlad and Bo - you're saying the offense hit s***** pitching and didn't succeed v. Kershaw, Buehler and Meada? Stop the f***ing press! Next on the 6 pm news. New research has confirmed that water is wet. Nah man, I was discussing the offense as a whole. I know you guys have had a measured response, but the talking heads across T.V. and radio have been overly sensational and have been ranting and raving over quite a small sample size. Bo and Vlad have no doubt looked awesome, but that leaves 7 other roster starting spots. I only bumped this thread after the bats looked cold because some of the responses were a little harsher than I anticipated. ...

5ToolPhenom Verified Member Posted September 7, 2019 Author Posted September 7, 2019 Well, since my OP the team has continued to lose and struggle offensively... Gonna be 7 losses out of their last 8 with McKay and some bullpen scrubs 1 hitting them tonight. Look, I'm not trying to be negative, but the offense looks like it's going to be a problem going forward. Shapiro's mission statement was that they'd be competing again by 2020... I don't see it happening, not by a long shot. And I only post this because of how bad I got ridiculed. It's okay to love the team and also be critical.

You got ridiculed for predicting that a mixture of very talented rookies and replacement level trash would struggle offensively and thinking it was worth starting a thread over.
5ToolPhenom Verified Member Posted September 7, 2019 Author Posted September 7, 2019 I was simply making some commentary regarding the media coverage at the time and some people got all pissy. And lets be honest with one another, as fans, do you guys feel good about this season as a whole? I sure don't. Even Vladdy, sure, you see the talent there. But I think most of us would've hoped that he'd be putting up more than a 1-1.5 WAR season. I know the game has changed and no one bats an eyelash when teams punt seasons, but as a fan, I don't get much enjoyment from watching a team finish the season at 40 games under 500

It's so weird when people are saying in March, "this team is going to lose 95 games but it's part of the process" and then seem disappointed and hopeless when it actually happens in September. Bizarre.

It's so weird when people are saying in March, "this team is going to lose 95 games but it's part of the process" and then seem disappointed and hopeless when it actually happens in September. Bizarre. I do think it's been a bit worse than most people expected. IIRC most win predictions here were in the 75 range, but not much has gone right and the team is going to lose 100 games. The pitching staff has been a tire fire outside of Stro and Giles, and the only pleasant surprise has been Thornton showing as a possible 5th starter going forward. And the offense has been similar. Drury, McKinney, Tellez and Teoscar have been disasters. Jansen hasn't hit. Vlad has kinda sucked and we all thought he'd hit the ground running and win ROY. Grichuk got a long term extension then tanked the season. There have been more bright spots here than on the pitching staff (Gurriel, Biggio, Bichette), but it's been pretty rough overall. I think if you showed us the team's final 2019 stats back in March we'd all be pretty disappointed. Overall direction is good, but Atkins still has a lot to prove as a GM IMO.
