Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2018 Posted December 27, 2018 King you should hop on the podcast some time Yes, because 5 hosts isn't enough.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2018 Posted December 27, 2018 I liked the part about wOBA.. As I mentioned, in a previous post, I think it has some flaws, but it was interesting and sparks discussion. The thing about wOBA is that it doesn't take situation into account. A single is weighted more than a walk (slightly), because over the hundreds of thousands of prior baseball games that have been recorded, singles lead to runs more than walks, irrespective of how the single was hit or how many pitches were thrown before it happened, who was on base and where they were at the time. The context isn't relevant. Order of events is important in reality of course, but no player can control the order of events with any certainty, nor their own place in the order of events. That's why when a team in 1 inning hits 3 straight singes and then a home run, they score more than a team that hits a home run followed by 3 singles. Same events, different order, more runs, fewer runs. Players cannot control the order, so giving credit to them like they can is folly.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2018 Author Posted December 27, 2018 I liked the part about wOBA.. As I mentioned, in a previous post, I think it has some flaws, but it was interesting and sparks discussion. You have to explain these flaws. Giving two isolated incidents as an example of a flaw is nonsense because, by that standard, no stat can possibly be "flawless" and by the same standard, all the older stats are WAY more flawed. Take the example you gave. OBP treats a first pitch infield single and a 13 pitch walk the same way. It treats a regular walk and a 13 pitch walk the same way. So does OPS. RBI treats a game winning solo home run and a sac fly in a blowout the same. Slugging treats a one pitch infield single infinitely more favourably that a 13 pitch walk. So does batting average. So, you're going to have to explain, given the standard that you yourself have set, why wOBA is more flawed than literally anything else out there and why you'd ever use other stats in lieu of wOBA when they are demonstrably more flawed.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 28, 2018 Posted December 28, 2018 The rant about Luciano being eligible was misguided. It was a loophole to a rule that has since been patched. I read that Luciano is the last player that would have been eligible to be taken before this patch was in place. Also, I don't think it's unfair to him at all. He pretty much wins the lottery here if he spends any amount of time in the major leagues. And the minimum pension after 43 days of service time. Pretty certain every player in rookie ball who signs for $85,000 would take that in a heartbeat and not look back. +1 for MLB Pipeline grades being BS. It's a load of garbage. I think the Anibal hate is unwarranted. He obviously was lucky last year to an extent last year but he projects to be a league average starter with good ratios, which is an okay piece. Kendall Graveman signed with the Cubs. Bingo! Good post, agree on Sanchez as well.
Arjun Nimmala Vancouver Canadians - A+ SS It's been slow going at the start of the season for Nimmala, but on Sunday, he was 3-for-5 with his 3rd home run and 3 RBI. Explore Arjun Nimmala News >
