Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2018 Posted August 1, 2018 If it was the NBA I would agree with you. But its Baseball and no salary cap exists. I would rather pay 2 million a year for the next 30 years. Its like a signing a veteran reliever every year. Why? If we're rebuilding it's not crippling us now. Also, no one in their right minds would agree to defer the money like that. They'd likely require it to have compounded interest of at least 5% a year, which would be 260M total I think?

And they will every July 1 until 2035, as part of a deferred contract that the Mets negotiated with Bonilla after the 1999 season. Instead of paying him $5.9 million that year, the Mets would owe Bonilla almost $30 million over the course of the deferred contract. How’d that happen? Watch the video above to find out."
TheHurl Site Manager Posted August 1, 2018 Posted August 1, 2018 So are the Jays getting insurance money from the Tulo contract? Normally big contracts are insured and if he doesn't play a single game you would think they would get financial relief. They started writing his insurance policy but with all the pre-existing injuries they are still writing up the provisions. Honestly I don't know. Teams like the Nats have said f*** it (as have the Jays FO's in the past) as it's not worth it but they are the only ones I know that have said they won't. Contracts aren't insured anymore (many insurance companies who thought it would be cool to be affiliated with major league baseball went under), it's the player that is insured and it's usually 2 or 3 years at a max. As the player gets older the premiums get higher. The only example I ever heard was Cliff Lee (discussed in a session at the Prime Time Conference in Toronto in 2015) who had a 65% insurance policy (meaning they would receive 65% of his salary for games missed). There was a clause that they would receive $0 if it had anything to do with his back. That policy was 7% of his salary (which was probably at $20M) oh yeah and the deductible on MLB players is the league minimum contract.

Id rather get the salary over with in the short term and not put a stranglehold on management when this team is in its contention years. Deferring money is almost always a recipe for disaster.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2018 Posted August 1, 2018 Prince Fielder is still being paid, I believe the Rangers had insurance on his contract so they're covering the contract. He also takes up a 40 man spot IIRC. Nope.
