July 2, 2016 http://www.milb.com/assets/images/4/8/6/187540486/cuts/Leroux_Chris_640_o7zvfzdd_tvtle5qa.jpg The Buffalo Bisons were just one pitch away from the chance at some late heroics but the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders sent six men to the plate with two out, scoring four times in the eighth inning for the 5-1 victory Saturday afternoon at Coca-Cola Field. Ike Davis started the Riders' second last at-bat with single to right field. Starter Chris Leroux then used a force out and a ground out to retire the next two batters to keep the game tied 1-1. After a single and a walk, Leroux left the hill when a second single to Ben Gamel gave the Riders a one-run lead. "I felt good, I just made the one bad pitch there in the end. He was kind of looking for a slider outside, I should've come in with a fastball," said the 6-foot-6 righty. "I definitely followed the game plan. It's frustrating that it ended the way it did but that's baseball. I've definitely had games like that before. It's just one of those days." Even though he took the loss, Leroux had one of his best starts of the year before handing the ball off to Dustin Antolin. The Montrealer had retired 14 of 15 batters before taking the hill to begin the eighth and ended up with seven strikeouts over a season-best 7.2 innings. "He got us as far as he could go. We're kind of strapped right now and have to go bullpen-by-committee tomorrow," said manager Gary Allenson, whose scheduled starter for Sunday, Drew Hutchison, pitched Saturday afternoon for the Blue Jays. "I almost kissed him out there when he got us as far as he did." With two men aboard, Antolin was unable to keep the floodgates from opening further as the Riders singled twice, walked and used a pair of throwing errors to score three more. The Bisons scored their only run in the bottom of the second. Domonic Brown led off the inning by bouncing a long liner off of the warning track in right-center field and over the wall for a ground rule double. Melky Mesa traded places with his fellow outfielder when he roped a ball off of the wall in left. Casey Kotchman then singled to put runners on the corners with none out, but the Herd was unable to capitalize any further. Wilkin Castillo lined a ball right at the second baseman and Jio Mier nearly had a sac fly to right field, but the throw from Aaron Judge was close enough to the plate for catcher Gary Sanchez to apply the sweep tag on Mesa's shoulder, bringing a sudden end to any potential rally. The RailRiders tied the game in the following frame as speedster Cesar Puello bunted his way aboard, stole second base and reached home on an RBI single from Pete Kozma. Johnny Barbato made his first start of the season for the Riders and was unable to pitch beyond the second inning. The usual reliever allowed three hits and a walk and was charged with the only run before making way for Diego Mareno. The Venezuelan right-hander put in yeoman's work for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, hurling five scoreless innings to keep the game tied at ones. Mareno improves his record to 4-1 with the victory, extending the RailRiders' win streak to seven games. BISONS NOTES: Following the Blue Jays' 19-inning marathon, Drew Hutchison and Aaron Loup were called up Saturday morning to aid Toronto's beleaguered bullpen. Bo Schultz was optioned back to Buffalo…The Herd also activated reliever Bobby Korecky and catcher Luis Hurtado from the disabled list…Jesus Montero doubled in the sixth inning to move into a tie with Andy Burns at 19 for the team lead…Chris Leroux threw 112 pitches, three more than any other Bisons pitcher has hurled this season. Binghamton took Game 1, 9-2, and New Hampshire responded with a 12-5 win in Game 2. In Game 1, the B-Mets opened up a 3-0 lead in the first inning with a two-out walk and back-to-back homers from Dominic Smith and Matt Oberste. New Hampshire answered back with a pair in the top of the third, sending eight batters to the plate in the process. Jorge Flores walked and Shane Opitz singled to begin the rally, and two batters later Roemon Fields walked to load the bases. A Ryan Lavarnway sac fly made it 3-1, and Rowdy Tellez singled home Opitz to narrow the deficit to 3-2. Smith and Oberste struck again in the third inning with another pair of homers. Smith went deep to right, and Obertse launched one to left. Their second back-to-back effort gave Binghamton a 6-2 advantage. The B-Mets tacked on three more with two sacrifice flies in the fifth and an RBI single from Smith in the sixth. Mets starter Ricky Knapp got the win in his Double-A debut, pitching all seven innings and allowing just four hits. New Hampshire's offense broke out in Game 2, plating four runs in the first and six runs in the fourth to blow out the Mets, 12-5. Rowdy Tellez led the way with a two-run homer (his 12th) in the first and a two-run double in the fourth. Adding a single in the second, the slugging prospect has now reached in 15 of his first 20 plate appearances in the series, hitting two homers and driving in nine runs. Dwight Smith, Jr. hit his eighth homer of the year, a sky-scraping blast to give New Hampshire a 5-1 lead in the third. Jorge Saez produced a pair of RBIs with a double in the first and a single in the fourth as New Hampshire opened up an 11-3 lead after 4.5 innings. Ian Parmley drove in three with a two-run triple in the fourth and an RBI single in the sixth. Conner Greene (W, 1), the top pitching prospect in the Blue Jays system, allowed four earned runs on three hits with three walks and four strikeouts in five innings. Wil Browning handled the rest, throwing two hitless frames with a walk and four strikeouts. After two straight days of doubleheaders, the Fisher Cats and B-Mets will wrap up the six-game series with a one game on Sunday night at 6:35 p.m. LHP Shane Dawson (4-4, 3.76 ERA) is scheduled to start for New Hampshire. The Fisher Cats will return home on Monday, July 4 to begin a four-game series with the Portland Sea Dogs. Each game will be followed by an Atlas Fireworks Show, including a Mega-Blast Atlas Fireworks Spectacular on the Fourth of July. The top two prospects in the Red Sox organization, Yoan Moncada and Andrew Benintendi, are currently on Portland's roster. The two ballclubs, the top teams in the Eastern Division, have split the first two games of their series. A pitchers' duel between South Bend's Kyle Miller and Lansing's Angel Perdomo was broken in the top of the sixth by a double steal. With Juan Kelly batting, Max Pentecost stole second base, drawing a throw that allowed Ryan Metzler to swipe home plate. The 1-0 lead did not last long. In the home half of the sixth, Tyler Alamo delivered a one-out single. Martinez followed with his seventh home run of the year, cranked out to deep left. The homer ended a stretch of 16 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings for Perdomo against South Bend. Perdomo (Loss, 2-3) pitched 5 2/3 innings in total, allowing seven hits, two runs, two walks and six strikeouts. Miller (Win, 4-1) countered with six innings of two-hit ball, giving up just the one unearned run, and recording seven strikeouts without issuing a walk. He was followed to the mound by Tyler Peitzmeier (Save, 1), who blanked the Lugnuts on two hits in the final three frames, striking out four. The scoring was closed out by Flete's first home run since July 21, 2015, victimizing Tom Robson in the seventh inning and putting icing on the cake in front of a crowd of 7,669. Lansing's only hits in the game were singles notched by Metzler, Pentecost, Jake Thomas and Carl Wise. Left fielder Connor Panas went 0-for-4, ending his on-base streak at 19 games. Reliever Dan Lietz made his return to the mound in the 6th inning, retiring the only batter he faced. Lugnuts southpaw Ryan Borucki (5-3, 2.85) starts the series finale against Cubs right-hander Adbert Alzolay (5-4, 4.39), set for 7:35 p.m. Sunday night. The Lugnuts return to Cooley Law School Stadium in time for Independence Day! THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2016 Posted July 3, 2016 Tellez is truly having a splendid season and the hits are finally starting to find holes for him. He could be ready by late 2017.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2016 Posted July 3, 2016 Rowdy is on absolute fire. Its not out of the question he ends the year in Buffalo.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2016 Posted July 3, 2016 Rowdy is on absolute fire. Its not out of the question he ends the year in Buffalo. He could... But I think they leave him at AA fire the entire season and just start him in AAA to start 2017. Moving from AA to AAA has never really been as big a deal as moving up at any other level. It's always been believed that your best (blue chip) prospects are at AA, and AAA are your journeymen guys.
