In the final game of a two-game home series against Rochester, the Bisons edged the Red Wings 9-6 on Thursday.

 

With the score tied at six in the bottom of the eighth inning, Junior Lake walked and stole second and third against Red Wings' reliever Dan Runzler. Alexi Casilla then broke the tie with a RBI single past a drawn-in infield. Three batters later, Matt Dominguez, now facing Marcus Walden, made it 8-6 with a RBI single of his own. Jesus Montero came through with his third RBI of the game in the next at bat, with a single that tacked on a third insurance run.

 

"Lake was the key to the inning there, stealing second and third, otherwise Casilla's ball up the middle is not a hit, because they were playing the infield in," Bisons' manager Gary Allenson said postgame.

 

"We fought today," Jesus Montero said postgame. "It was a cold day, but we did it. That was a nice at bat by Casilla in the eighth inning."

 

Montero and Domonic Brown both went 3-5 with three RBI on Thursday, with Dalton Pompey also collecting three of the Herd's 14 hits.

 

"Good day for Montero and Brown, we got some nice situational hitting, some key hits with runners on base," Allenson said.

 

"I was trying to go out there and have fun, just see the ball and hit it, and see what happens," Jesus Montero said.

 

The Bisons struck early, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Montero gave the Herd the lead with a RBI single off Rochester starter Andrew Albers, Albers, the soft-tossing former Bison, then yielded a bases-loaded sac-fly to A.J. Jimenez, giving the Herd an insurance run.

 

In the second, Domonic Brown knocked his second hit of the game, scoring David Adams on a base hit to center. Montero drove in his second run in the bottom of the third, smashing his seventh home run of the campaign.

 

Roberto Hernandez took the mound for Buffalo, earning a no-decision in 4.2 innings of work. The righty did not allow a hit for the first three innings, but struggled with control later in his outing. A leadoff, 12-pitch walk to Adam Brett Walker did not come back to haunt Hernandez, as he escaped the inning.

 

In the fifth inning, Hernandez loaded the bases for Kennys Vargas. The Red Wings' first baseman came through with a RBI three run double to cut the Herd's lead to 4-3. Hernandez was removed in the inning, after allowing three runs, five straight baserunners, and three walks in the inning.

 

"The negative part was the walks," Allenson said. The Bisons allowed seven walks, while Rochester yielded just one free-pass all game. "If we can cut down on the walks, it's a little more relaxing game for the manager. Roberto needs to work ahead. Too often he was behind in the count."

 

Ben Rowan relieved Hernandez in the fifth, fanning Buck Britton with two runners on base. The submarine pitcher allowed one hit in 2.0 innings, before being replaced by Patrick McCoy in the seventh.

 

After a rough first few frames, Andrew Albers appeared to settle down, retiring seven in a row from the fourth through the sixth inning. Two errors on a ball hit in play by Dalton Pompey left two runners on in the sixth, as Rochester brought in reliever Nick Greenwood. Domonic Brown then plated two on a single, increasing the Bisons' lead to 6-3.

 

Buffalo's Patrick McCoy walked a pair in the eighth and was removed, as Dustin Antolin allowed a two-run double to Wilfredo Tovar, making it a one run, 6-5 Herd lead. Adam Brett Walker tied the game at six, with a double down the left field line.

 

After the Bisons took a 9-6 in the eighth, Ryan Tepera earned his sixth save of the year, pitching a scoreless ninth inning.

 

The Bisons have an off day on Friday, but return to the field on Saturday for a double-header against Charlotte. Game one against the Knights is set for 6:05 p.m. from Coca-Cola Field.

MANCHESTER, NH - The newest member of the Fisher Cats has made quite an impression in his first four Double-A appearances. With a pair of homers and a double in Thursday's 6-2 loss to the Richmond Flying Squirrels, Jason Leblebijian increased his batting average to .529 (9-for-17), with over half of his hits going for extra bases.

 

Leblebijian finished 3-for-4 with a solo homer to center in the third and a three-run blast to right-center in the ninth. The latter long ball brought the Fisher Cats within 6-5, but they would strand the tying run at first base when Christian Jones (S, 1) struck out Rowdy Tellez to end the game.

 

In 15 of their last 16 losses, the Fisher Cats (26-33) have been defeated by either one or two runs.

 

New Hampshire took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a triple from Ian Parmley and an RBI double from Shane Opitz, but they quickly lost the advantage. After holding Richmond (23-37) scoreless through two innings, Casey Lawrence (L, 2-4) allowed a pair of sacrifice flies the third. Richmond had a 2-1 lead, and would not trail again.

 

The Flying Squirrels plated four unanswered runs thanks to a pair of homers from Carlos Moncrief to extend their lead to 6-2 after eight innings.

 

Auburn, Mass. native Tyler Beede (W, 4-3) allowed two runs in six innings while striking out seven hitters for Richmond.

EASTLAKE, OH - Lane Thomas homered for third straight game, helping the Lansing Lugnuts build a 5-0 lead, but Martin Cervenka's three-run eighth-inning double swung the Lake County Captains to a 6-5 victory on Thursday at Classic Park.

 

Lake County (36-24) completed a three-game home sweep of Lansing (29-29), pulling off late comebacks in each game of the series.

 

The Nuts scored two runs in the 1st inning, one in the 2nd, one in the 4th and one in the 5th against Lake County starter Matt Esparza, the reigning Midwest League Pitcher of the Week. They were boosted in their efforts by All-Star first baseman Juan Kelly, who slugged his second home run of the series, and center fielder Thomas, who continued an impressive streak of strength.

 

The 20-year-old Thomas, Lansing's youngest position player, entered June with only one home run to his name - but he led off the fourth inning by blasting his fifth home run of the month, his fourth in his last five games and his third in as many days.

 

Thomas scored two runs in the game, giving him seven runs scored in the series.

 

Lansing led 5-0 entering the last of the sixth behind All-Star starter Angel Perdomo, who appeared to be cruising, but three quick hits from Lake County sent the big left-hander to the showers.

 

The Captains cashed in three runs in the frame, scoring a pair of inherited runs against reliever Starlyn Suriel, before finishing their rally two innings later.

 

Lugnuts closer Dusty Isaacs (Blown Save, 4; Loss, 1-2) allowed back-to-back singles to start off the eighth, and then committed a throwing error on Yonathan Mendoza's intended sacrifice bunt to load the bases. Cervenka followed with a line drive to right-center to clear the bases and give the Captains their first lead of the game.

 

It was the latest big blow in the series by the Prague native. On Wednesday night, he had supplied a two-out, two-run go-ahead single in the eighth inning, helping the Captains beat the Lugnuts, 14-12.

 

Lake County reliever Dominic DeMasi (Win, 6-1) pitched the final three innings in relief of Esparza without allowing a hit, stranding two Lugnuts on base in the ninth.

 

The Captains won a second straight game despite a spate of errors. On Wednesday, Lake County committed six defensive miscues, leading to seven unearned runs. On this night, the Captains' defense settled for five more errors, though Lansing scored only one unearned run.

 

Lansing continues its six-game road trip with a 7:00 p.m. affair Friday at West Michigan. Left-hander Ryan Borucki (2-2, 3.03) gets the start against Whitecaps right-hander Kyle Dowdy (2-1, 2.52).

​1) Jason Leblebijian: Leblebijian has not been overmatched in the least at the AA level, as he continued to mash it going 3/4 with 2 dingers and a walk tonight.

 

2) Jesus Montero: Montero went 3/5 with a dinger.

 

3) Dalton Pompey: Pompey stayed hot going 3/5 with a stolen base. Looking for that callup!

He's a DH but they are working on getting him back into catching. Hitting at a 84 wRC+ rate in Lansing as a 23 year old though it won't much matter.

I enjoy these recaps but really wish you had something to actually get excited about outside of Pompey. Tellez has been a little disappointing but hes young for the level so ifs not overly disappointing at this point. It's interesting they were agressive with him but conservative for him. Connor Greene and Anthony Alford have been completely disappointing. I thought Greene would rape the Flordia State League and get back up to Double-A by June.

You can thank AA for that by selling off a million prospects last summer. There are still interesting prospects like Rios, Harris and Perdomo to follow. Urena too. Short season ball is starting up too so things only look up from here.
