READING, PENNSYLVANIA - The New Hampshire Fisher Cats had opportunities but fell short of a series split on Monday morning, losing 2-1 to the Reading Fightin Phils at FirstEnergy Stadium in Reading.

New Hampshire (26-30) took their 30th loss of the year, only scoring on a fifth-inning solo homer and stranding seven baserunners over the course of the game. Reading (39-19) took possession of the top record in the Eastern League with the victory.

The Fightin Phils struck first in the bottom of the third against Fisher Cats starter Jeremy Gabryszwski (L, 3-2). Christian Marrero reached on a one-out error by first baseman Matt Dean, and moved to second on a walk drawn by Dylan Cozens. Rhys Hoskins then hammered a double deep into the right-center field, scoring both Marrero and Cozens and putting Reading in front 2-0.

New Hampshire got on the board in the top of the fifth inning, with Reading starter Mark Leiter, Jr. (W, 2-0) on the hill. Dean blasted a first-pitch fastball over the right field fence for a leadoff solo homer, trimming Reading's lead to 2-1. The Fisher Cats couldn't tie it up, though, stranding four runners over the remainder of the game and taking the loss.

Gabryszwski took the hard-luck loss, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and a walk over six frames while fanning three. Murphy Smith tossed two shutout innings, with one strikeout against one walk.

New Hampshire opens up a six-game homestead with Tuesday night's tilt against the Richmond Flying Squirrels. Lefty Shane Dawson will start for New Hampshire against Richmond righty Dan Slania. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m., and Bob Lipman has the call starting at 6:45 p.m. on the Fisher Cats Radio Network.
