I'm inclined to believe that AA would have made changes to build upon the success of last season. Shapiro has a vastly different vision so he comes over here and without a horse in the race so he just settles for the status-quo.

 

Shapiro probably wanted to rebuild due to the team's poor farm system and aging roster, but he kept AA's team together and added some depth around it.

 

AA dipped at the right time, and he knew exactly what he was doing.
