o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted August 23, 2015 Posted August 23, 2015 I don't see how people are ok with full retard but not autism. Many kids suffer from retardation too. But whatever, I'll drop it. the 1980s want their outdated way of thinking back. it's mentally challenged, or ID or even IDD bro...

o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted August 23, 2015 Posted August 23, 2015 Exactly. I hope they are doing ok. Can't be easy. Heart goes out to you. thanks mate. She's great. lives on her own in her own apt, works full time... she has been really aware of what she needs to do to be her best. great young lady. She just started traveling on her own too. She was in London 2 years ago, Japan last year and California this year. She has become very independent. It's always a challenge but one she wont give in to.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted August 23, 2015 Posted August 23, 2015 Agree. Im ok with the ol' generic "full retard" but autism is a little too specific. Know too many people with kids suffering from it. Just my opinion. Agreed. My best friends kid has it and I have begun to take comments like that personally.

But whatever, I'll drop it. It's all cool, just like BigCecil said it's a bit too specific. But in my opinion the actual "meaning" of retard over the years has changed to an insult for someone being and idiot or dumb. The actual original "meaning" is almost solely in the past due to the cultural shift as O2 explained.

However, even if people start insulting people with the term mentally disabled, it is not any more politically correct (if used as an insult). Maybe it would be a good idea for posters on this forum to avoid insults all together.

Autism would actually be quite vague. My cousin is autistic and cannot look after himself however, you have people who have Aspergers on the autism spectrum who can be literally geniuses. But i can see why it touches people the wrong way. Edited August 23, 2015 by labadee
