Many of us have been frustrated with Gibby not playing Smoak at 1B more consistently.

The stabilizing influence of his D can't be underestimated imo. While his range isn't great, his size and sure hands gives the IF a huge target and he can pick.

Collabello is so brutal on D. There is no need to play Edwin @1B. With Martin-JD-Tulo-Goins/Travis and Smoak this is a very solid defensive IF.

On O he has been inconsistent. Teams feed him breaking balls and change ups, but he is a SH power bat who has upside. His fWAR is only .4

When they played the Mets in NY,i was expecting to see Smoak start both games.

I hope he starts in Philly. You can tell,he is one of those guys who would improve with regular playing time.

With that said,EE will probably get the start at 1st base.

Its just my perception but his soft hands and ability to pick seems to stabilize our whole D. He was involved in a lot of plays today and there is no fear factor like we have with Edwin and Colla.

Ya. I know. I have google too. I don't think that correlates well to the positive impact he has made on the IF D.

He's as dependable at the plate as Tulo, and Bautista says it all for me.nine times out of ten,an easy out.

Smoak WRC 101

Colabello WRC 141

Well that settles it then. Install Colla at 1B or LF!

Colla has had many more PAs and with that WRC he has a 0.3 fWAR. That's because there is no place to put him on the field because he is exceptionally bad defensively.

Respect the story and the guy with a stick...but he cannot be in the field. He can DH occasionally against LHP or pinch hit.

so true. We aren't hitting great - we have been winning with pitching and great D lately. Defense is a thing and Smoak has helped.

I agree Smoak is a better defender, but he has an OBP of .292 compared to Colabello's .367 - 1ST base is a hitters position.

Both players have a 0.3 war and Colabello has played the majority of games in the outfield, which have obviously affected his WAR.

Colabello's D at 1B is not nearly as bad as LF, so this data is no good considering he's no longer playing LF.

Colabello's UZR/150 is putrid at every position he plays at.

Ah, so you posted Colabello's career UZR at exclusively first base. Nice cherry pick.

Of course, you posted Smoak's 1st base UZR and then posted Colabello's OF UZR. I wouldn't recommend playing Colabello in the OF ever. All I ask is you provide the proper info, we're clearly talking about each players defence at 1st.

No actually -1.8 UZR at 1B is his career number. He hasn't been that bad if you go by UZR.

Ignoring the D numbers for a second, all you have to do is watch him trying to start a DP...pick a throw...or go back on a foul ball. I hate bitching on the guy because I like what he has done for us at the plate, but he just should not be there.

So in mere 543.1 innings (not even half a season) we take his career UZR numbers at 1st base. Gotcha. I can't wait to see how that regresses.

This is why they say it takes 3+ seasons (full) for UZR to start to become reliable. Clearly Smoak is better than Colabello.

At defense or all around?

I'm just speaking about his defense. All around it's hard to say, anyone who says otherwise is just conjecturing.

0-4 today average down to .215, OBP .285 how long will he continue to play before Colabello has to take over?

Smoak - UZR @ 1B: 2.1 | UZR/150: 7.2

Bello - UZR @ 1B: -14 | UZR/150: -45.1

Yeah.............................. Smoak's above average glove > Bello's near historic terrible defense at 1B.

You're using his outfield UZR why? His career UZR at first is -1.8. Do people actually believe that Colabello is terrible at first? Was nobody watching last nights game?

Colabello will soon be the starting first baseman, you heard it here first.

I think you just keep using the platoon.at 1B. Smoak has certainly struggled but I think you try to ride it out. Wonder who the 1B will be next year. Imagine Chris Davis in this lineup and ballpark?

So is the answer going in to 2016 to have Smoak as the affordable 1B, Cola as the cheap DH, and move EE for a controllable starter?
Posted
We have money to spend and he fits in nice as a lefty middle of the order who can play a pretty good First Base. I love it personally.

I'd just love it to piss off the O's fans. Can you imagine? I bet they accuse him of always being on the juice and rag on it there after.

It sure is and bill James puts 1b defense just above pitcher defense on the defensive spectrum.

Cola is our secret weapon

Smoak has some awful at bats at times, strikes out a lot but his D is great. Too bad we could not combine the Cola and Smoak. Not a fan of Smoaks bat though, hits the occasional HR but looks lost especially on Breaking balls a lot.
